Spyderco’s line of Para Military knives has been hailed for its ergonomic shape and utility. However, due to their stature, they’ve also been deemed too large for some Read More
I just picked up the PM-2 with this steel and the not so chocolaty brown scales for the same price. More knife. Same money. And it wasn't from the Kentucky Colonel. I ordered it yesterday and it shipped today. (Free). If I have any recollection of posting this, I will come back and reveal the shipping time.
Isn't this just Spyderco's fault? They swapped to MAP pricing some time ago.
Since that moment prices went up here in the EU, MAP is even illegal within the EU. Some days ago there was a call out to business owners to report price agreements handed down from manufacturers.
Although I don't think it will make any serious impact.
Edit:
I 'm a Spydie fan, but the pricing strategy bugs me. Otherwise I probably bought more Spydie's the last couple of years.
This has already been said, but I already pre-ordered this on Knife center for less than this. Still waiting on shipment though, so maybe Massdrop knows something I don't.
I wonder if Massdrop is contractually obligated to offer a certain number of Spyderco products, and/or specific ones designated by Spyderco. Wanting to maintain the partnership, they do so with no expectations of selling anything. Indeed, Massdrop should actually hope someone doesnt sign up for the drop lest they immediately see the same knife elsewhere for cheaper and make a fuss. From MD's perspective, maybe these silly drops are just the price of keeping Spyderco on for the next Super Gold exclusive.
HatuletohThis makes a ton of sense, and I bet that you are correct. Like most others here, I often wonder why they even bother with drops like this. We know that they are typically subject to manufacturer minimum pricing from big boys like Spyderco. They probably have to offer these just for contractual compliance.
BigBuckNutzThanks, and yeah, youre right: if Massdrop has any control over the prices of Spyderco offerings, it would only be to charge more than the contractual minimum, and they might not even be able to do that. But as I think about it, Spyderco is cutting off their chelicerae to spite their cephlathoraxes with the intransigent minimum prices, particularly with a retailer like MD, whose specific prices on specific items are temporary and short-term by nature; moreover, the prices on past drops aren't archived in any sort of public place on the Internet that the might live on to upset other authorized Spyderco sellers with every google search
What I mean is that Spyderco is so notorious for never having their merch at a reduced price, they ought to let MD do drops at just a bit less, say, $5 to $10, because even that small discount would get people excited and buying since most would know that they will never find a better price. Spyderco could unload whatever stock they had too much of, MD would get the sale, and customers would save a tiny pittance with smiles on their faces--WIN/WIN/win.
Come on, Massdrop — you HAVE to do better than this. I thought the whole point was to get lower prices with group purchases? You're not even being competitive with sites that have it readily available for immediate shipment.
