Spyderco looked at their lineup and said:
"Hey, you know what we need? Another leaf shaped blade that is identical to everything else we've ever made"
I could not be more bored with spyderco in general. They might as well make one knife model and allow you to order it in exactly how many millimeters you want, since everything they make is just another "it's a size in between x and y"
PigmonkeYIf that is not your cup of tea, maybe you should look at their new 2017 models.
As for making a smaller pm2 well thats what people wanted. A lot of places limit blade lenght to 3in.
KaozerYeah but spyderco makes a bunch of identical knives around that length range. Same exact handles, same too-tall-for-decent-cutting leaf blade.
I guess people just really really wanted that compression lock.
I've owned enough identical spydercos over the last decade that i'm really hesitant to buy any more of them. In the 3 inch size bracket, i'd argue that a native 5 is a much more useful shape, rather than the big tall leaf on the para 3.
BPGZIf you are about cutting performance, you'd be looking at something that doesn't have a blade as tall as it is long. Makes it really difficult to do much besides open letters and packages.
PigmonkeYActually, pocket knives longer than this are illegal in some states. I have this knife. Its a good knife, which is really all I need it to be.
KaozerI have a collection. No problem with blade length, major problems with how tall it is. Tough to get into tight spots.
My real issue is that this thing is identical to literally everything else spyderco makes, there's no reason for it to exist. You could just put a sheet of every spyderco knife out in front of you, randomly pick one, and probably end up with something almost identical.
BPGZThere are PLENTY of other options in spyderco's lineup that are 3 inches and under though (about 180 different models under 3 inches, if you want to count different steels/colorways)? That have an identical blade and identical handles. I still fail to see the point. I mean, yeah, compression lock is pretty strong, but you're going to snap your blade before you get even most simple lockbacks to fail.
My personal favorite spydercos ever made were the Caly 3 sprint runs in ZDP. Not too leafy, not too tall, thin blades, 3 inches.
PigmonkeYWell for something truely different you could look at the spyderchef, mantra (2 i think has the very slim blade), stretch 2, euroedge or the rhino. These are mostly new 2016 or 2017 models which are very much not leaf bladed
