When you grip the knife, your thumb is on the spring, and your index finger is up against the guard. I've found that my thumb pressure is adequate to keep the knife solidly open. Even if I purposefully try to close the blade on my fingers, the guard hits my index finger and stops.
I'm not saying it's as safe as a locking folder for *every* use, but for my EDC purposes, I don't expect any problems.
