i just bought this knife a couple weeks ago for 167.95 and it is amazing. i absolutly love it. it comes with a great edge and beautiful finish on the blade. its stonewashed but it looks like its stonewashed over a mirror polished blade for a unique finish. its a little on the small side, i would prefer if it had a 3.5" blade

rogerxd45That's pretty much where I'm at on this knife also. I'd enjoy more of a fullsize version of this knife.

KnifeGuyWhat about a Southard with aftermarket scales (Something like carbon fiber or ctek)?
The steel on the Southard (CTS-204P) holds an edge much better than S30V anyways.

JediMasteri just dont really like the looks of original spyderco southard. i dont like knives that have sides that dont match. i want it to be either all metal or to have both sides with matching scales but i am currently saving up to buy a real southard tolk mid-tech which is available from brad southards webpage which has a 3.87" cts-xhp blade and a titanium handle. its very sexy.....but expensive :-(

rogerxd45Not only expensive, but next to impossible to buy. They are sold under a lottery when he does a new knife. They sell out almost instantly. No wonder, given the quality.
Brad Southard has been known to stop by/comment. I'd love to see an actual Southard offered here.

JediMasterS30V still handles everything you can throw at it. Edge retention is out of this world. It's still plenty steel for most applications.

JediMasterThese scales are carbon fiber -- and quite beautiful! As for the steel, I doubt anyone would be disappointed - mine cuts like a laser.

shard_incyea i have knives is s110v, m390 (which is bohlers version of cts-204p) elmax, cpm-d2 S35vn, cpm-4v I have been happy with s30v, its one of the best knife steels. sure other steels hold their edge longer but i think s30v is a great compromise between edge holding and ease of sharpening. I have been hearing some people saying s30v isnt as good as (insert whatever type of super steel) but it seems most arent actually basing it on any form of actual testing. i think what happens is they buy a really expensive knife and are talking down on steels like s30v to help justify the money they spent on the knife they got. dont get me wrong i love the top of the line "super steels" like , s110v, cts-204p ect... but i think s30v is an awesome steel and i dont think your going to find many people that are unhappy with its ability to hold an edge.
i also want to mention that after re-profiling the edge of my positron to a more acute angle it is incredibly sharp. I dont know why.....maybe its the geometry of the edge or that its a full flat grind but after resharpening the positron is the sharpest folding knife i own. it is truly amazing.every single person i show it to so far has been very impressed with how sharp the edge is. so far its holding that edge very well

shard_incthe tolk midtechs are currently available for purchace on his website. the blue and the bronze are in stock. the plain brushed titanium version was in stock the last time i checked but now its sold out. however there are some available on ebay and a couple other places for the same price as his website. no crazy 100% markup that you sometimes see on popular knives
her is the link for the southard tolk http://www.southardknives.com/southard-shop/preorder-southard-performance-series-tolk/

rogerxd45I had a Tolk, fantastic knife. Feels crazy light in hand. For me, it was just a bit too long. I'd get an Avo Mk II if he made one, though.

rogerxd45I'm with you. I have blades in XHP, 7Cr, 440C, Elmax, Crumwear, VG-10, and some nameless "stainless" steels on SAKs and the like. S30V is fine, works as well for me as any of the "super" steels I've used. For cutting up an apple or cutting tape (you know, the type of shit we mostly use our knives for) it's great. I'm not a CATRA machine I just want need to cut this candy bar in half.
