I am hearing that the detent on the Sliverax is a bit on the loose side, allowing the blade to deploy with relatively little intended movement, compared to other Spyderco knives. Is anyone finding this to be true, and/or problematic? I really don't need the blade opening up in my pocket.
Thanks all...

With apologies to Massdrop and Spyderco: I walked into my local knife shop the other day ready to buy the "Sliverax" (and I swear they must have meant "siLverax" but misprinted it early on, and just went with it rather than trying to fix the misprint). I'd wanted a Spyderco flipper for a while, and the knife shop had a 24 hr sale on them, which means they're overstocked with a model. That place is so great to me that I try very hard to buy anything they put on sale like this, even if I dont want it, just to help them out. But this time our interests aligned.
They brought me the knife, I flipped it open, and--what the hell?! Something pinched me. I tried it again, same thing: a soft but still distinctly unpleasant pinch on the right index finger, the one doing the flipping. I realized after a few more flips it was the compression lock on the back, in conjunction with the flipper, or flipping action, at least. As the blade deploys, the tang pushes the lock open, then slides along until its past the steel liner, and lock drops shut. As the blade opened the lock, that is, as the blade was swinging upward about halfway deployed, the lock would pinch the skin of my finger against the liner.
It was greatly painful by any means, not really even pain-inducing, per se, but it most definitely was uncomfortable. And completely unavoidable if one flips open the knife, which is the only way to deploy the blade.
I couldnt justify buying the thing with a feature like that. Not for $150. Maybe there's a reason most Spyderco flippers are in the $200 to $450 range.
This is one of Spyderco's best looking knives, but everything I've read, seen or heard about it mentions the weak detent as a potential deal-breaker. Since I like flippers that actually flip, it would certainly be so for me.
Why can't Spyderco figure out flippers? Their Taichung factory puts out models with impeccable fit and finish in every other way, but they can't make a consistently good flipper because the detent is mush. Several chinese budget brands have the detent thing dialed in on knives that cost 1/4 of this or less(ruike, tangram, etc). Heck, these days, even Kershaw is making unassisted flippers with good action for <$40 anymore (atmos, natrix, fraxion). Get it together Spyderco, you're one of the best knife makers out there, it's getting embarrassing.

" Once deployed, you can close the knife with just one hand by pressing the Compression lock, which does double duty as a super reliable lock, too. "
So the lock does double duty as a lock? Good to know! :D
LaserbaitWell obviously it's a compressor too. It must use a non-standard air fitting though...

Crappy detent. Crappy price. No thanks. Too bad, it is one of the better looking Spydercos.

BoxBladeWith the $15 discount if you decline the pouch it's about $12 cheaper than MAP, which is unfortunately the best Massdrop will do for any Spyderco unless its being discontinued.

OnionmanGood point. This knife won't appeal to me unless they fix the detent. Shabazz had the flipper cut off and just uses the Spydie hole. Have a good weekend.

What a great knife this is! Ergos are terrific. Detent is a bit weak so you won't get the "pop" when using the flipper, but otherwise a very light, yet solid, knife.

Eww spyderco S30V. No thanks. Also, I could buy this NOW and have it TOMORROW from multiple online retailers. With Spyderco's MAP this is not even a competitive price. Just seems unnecessary.

azraelsblade“Eww spyderco S30V. No thanks.” How can anybody have an issue with Spyderco’s S30V treatment? I guess we know which alloy ‘Azrael’s blade’ isn’t made of.
