given all of the ongoing drop out there i.e. Kizer with similar material and better fit & finish for 1/2 the price, this one isn't really as enticing. TBH Spyderco should consider reviewing their pricing policy for their TW/JP made models as some of them are way more expensive than their Golden Colorado made model. I personally prefer the Golden made models and i feel like the quality is as high, if not better, especially their Sebenza style pivot bushing. For about $150 i can get an S110V Paramilitary 2 which IMO is better than the Southard in every aspect.

massdrop01I've wondered what has happened to the US knife makers now that aggressive foreign competitors are producing better and better knives and pricing them so aggressively
Benchmade took the smart step of on-shoring all production so they can play the "US made" angle. This Spyderco is produced in Taiwan and priced at levels comparable or higher than US made stuff. Poor business approach IMHO
-> Why not just buy from a non-US company directly and save a bundle?

DDroThe Spyderco Taichung factory puts out unbelievable work, I think it would be a huge mistake to write them off as simply foreign cheapness.
The Seki City models like the Delica and Dragonfly are built in a highly specific way, as essentially high-end consumable working knives. There's a reason those pinnacles of 1980's materials and design are still so popular, and it's because they absolutely rock for what they are meant to deliver.
The trick is to remember that they aren't a PM2, they aren't a Slysz collab, they are FRN-handled lightweight knives meant to be problem-free and ergonomically flawless for the user, plus easily replaced when they start to show their age.

OmniseedI'm not writing this off as foreign, I'm writing it off as overpriced. I know the Taichung knives are well made, just not worth it to me.
Earlier drop for this were previously about $200 so maybe some sticker shock from that as well.

DDroExactly, it's not about who made it, it's about the value you get the price and the options available in the market. surely Taichung TW models are well made, i just don't think it's 50% better made than the Golden CO models IMO. For $250 you can get one of the WE knife models(which many people will argue is much better made) or get 2 different Kizer models that uses full titanium handle, ceramic ball bearing & detent, thick stock with similarly high-end steel with all of the great fit & finish. Hell, you can even get a ZDP189 Stretch 2 AND a S110V Manix 2 for the same price or less. Not to bet the dead horse, for $240 you can get a ZT0920, full 3D contoured titanium, and same 204P steel. It's the value you get for the money we are talking about here

DDroThe fit, finish And machining is better on this knife than any U.S knife I've owned. I have a Reate that will put any U.S made folder to sham. The ergo' and detail 👍🏻

massdrop01A agree about the ZT 0920, but that's not just a few $ differenc. This drop @ $124 is half the price of the ZT. That's what made my mind up. The best hands on customer service is Reat. they are just getting to expensive

DaveTuyaknifeSorry, I don't follow.
I know the Taichung knives are well made as I mentioned earlier. I also know there are other well made Chinese brands Like WE and Reate.
I just don't think the Southard is a good VALUE.
