A SRS-2170 combo would have been a better option. Better than conventional designs like the HD800 and they are more neutral than headphones like the Audeze and HiFiMAN planars.
LOL Have a entry Level SRS 3030 combo and it surpasses dynamic headphones, including the 1000 usd ones in my collection.

Agreed. It beats my ATH-AD2000 setup with a M1 DAC & B22/O22, and I loooooooooove that setup too. Glad I got it from MD!
SR-007 for this price would be tempting.
Hopefully this doesn't sour the relationship with Stax at all.
I feel like people willing to spend this kind of money for a mid-range e-stat set-up aren't waiting for a drop.
rofl, trying to have audiophile discussions on massdrop! the only comment necessary is "can't wait for these to show up" :) Either you know what these are and that 1600 is a decent price or you dont.
Financing options?
jabs
1) Purchase Bitcoins 2) Wait 3 months 3) Profit & buy Stax.
I love the design. STAX is just legendary. It's a must have if you claim yourself a true audiophile. In my opinion, any gear set under $1000 are just not worth getting, completely waste of money. You'll get nothing but terrible sound from low end gears, don't get fooled by those Internet articles. You get what you pay for and listening is believing. I have been there and done that.
I began putting money on Electrostatic speakers a while back and sell or give away my headphones. Even though I am not in the market for this, but I'd be proud to own one.

God I hope you are trolling.
This drop has the highest discussed-to-purchase ratio everrrrr

Infinite like any other ones without a purchase but at least one comment?
This is an awesome drop. I feel like a lot of the complaints are coming from people without very thorough knowledge of the product line. A few points:
1) This can be had for $1375, cheaper than the lowest drop, if you're willing to deal with a Japanese seller for possible warranty work: http://pricejapan.com/front/e_good_info.php?code=1028&category=10
2) Amplifier requirements for electrostatic headphones are not trivial. Though this combo is the most expensive pairing of an amp and headphones that Stax offers, the headphones and the amp both represent the middle of their range.
3) The only product Massdrop has offered to rival this drop would be the Koss ESP-950, which come at a lower price. They're also more prone to failure, and the E90 amplifier they come with is nowhere near the quality of this amp. The 950 is a good deal, but it is debatable whether it represents a better value. Planar headphones like the HE-6, and IEMs and CIEMS are in a completely different league. Some would correctly say a lesser league.
4) The rectangular design (called the Lambda) has been a mainstay for 40 years for a good reason. It's an excellent way to make an electrostatic panel, and it sounds fantastic. It also looks somewhat ridiculous if you're not used to it. Look at this as an opportunity to be your own man!

I disagree with the comment you would likely bypass the Stax for something higher-end after hearing the Koss. While the Koss cans and amplifier are very solid and deliver sound at a great price per dollar ratio, the Koss amplifier is not in the same league as the Stax, in my opinion. That said, the Koss is one of the most underrated headphones, period. I prefer the sound of planer and stats to dynamic headphones in nearly all incarnations. I think the HD700 and 800 are overrated for their price and require substantial care in choosing an amplifier. When a suitable amplifier is found it is most often expensive, discrete or tube based. I would take, in nearly all situations the Koss stats over my Sennheisers paired with my previous high-end tube based headphone preamp and separate amplifier. When the Koss goes on-sale around Christmas or on Massdrop they can be had with included amplifier for less than the HD700's and not much more than a pair of HiFi Man planer cans. I have seen the Koss sell for South of $650.
I have several pairs of cans for different types of music and for different moods. I found that a pair of AKG Q701's, an iFi DAC and iFi headphone amplifier (total all-in cost of about $500) delivers great sound that rivals many other more expensive equipment I own. Stats are not for everyone, though. They have a unique and accurate (generally) sound that may not work with most streamed music or low-resolution content whereas dynamic cans almost always work much better for that content, though that is a generalization and not always accurate.
The stats paired with a $500 turntable and $150 phono preamp will eat the lunch of many other systems and gear for pure musical enjoyment, at least for me. Either way you look at it, the Koss is a superb bargain at the usual $999 price and a legitimate steal when found on sale or through Massdrop. The truth is simple, if you find enjoyment in music with a $2 pair of buds and your iPhone, great. That is the point. Enjoyment. If you want what many consider to be world class sound and moving from or to a reference grade kit then the Stax are high on the list.

I really have only said I would buy the sale price ESP-950s over this offering. I would have jumped on a drop for SR-007s and a decent stax amplifier to accompany it.
Great explanation on the value and performance of the ESP-950. It's qualities are incredible for the price :)
the amp is a huge portion of the price.
I have signed the little petition thingy to get the esp-950 back. Sr007 would be fun, too.
whaaaaaaaat stax on massdrop wow
Decent price for this I guess. I've owned the 407 and 007mk2.5 (pictured in my display picture) and can say I've enjoyed electrostatics more than any other type of headphone. sr007mk1 is my favorite for sound quality
Enjoying my SRS-3170 that I got from MD. Electrostatic love~
I like that they are doing Stax, and I think they look fine. But for the price you could get an HE-6 and an Emotiva Mini-X which would be a much better, more well rounded set-up. If you are going Stax you might as well go all the way. Or if you really want an electrostatic; the Koss ESP-950 for half this price.
I would have been more interested in owning a set of their higher end phones like the SR-007 MK2. This headset is quality but lacks a lot of the benefits of their more modern designs.
Binge
Eh, yeah, but them by themselves retail for $2350, combing with an amp would probably end up being ~$3000 for Massdrop which would be a hard drop to push. Honestly I'm guessing they may have a hard time pushing this drop even.
Elsie
Truth. This isn't an easy piece to push... you have massdrop offering up such solutions as the unique miracle melody, esp-950, HE-500, and many other devices which could rival the mid-range Stax. Pushing for something like the SR-007 or any of their more modern designs would be a bit much I guess.
Is this a joke? It looks like something that came out of my grandparent's attic. hhaha
crooker
As it turns out, visual styling and audio quality are largely orthogonal concerns.
crooker
Too bad they sound better than anything you have ever put on your head.
Man... couldn't you guys have put one of their cheaper amps in this bundle? Especially since it's one of the lower end earspeaker sets... ;P
nmkef
It's the SRS-4170 which means it's a set so it doesn't exactly work that way
Looks like I travelled back in time to the 1970s!
I wish that 1) I had money for this and 2) it weren't so ugly.

Not all Stax are fugly but these certainly hit every branch on the way down. But they're also analogous to the the ugly partner in that mis-matched couple where you can safely assume they have a lot going on outside of looks. They sound phenomenal, you just won't leave home with them even if you could.
Kailec
These things shouldn't be leaving your house anyway :P
