Maybe a good idea to put in my emergency pack. But wish it could take AA, or common batteries.

The description states, "When it’s time to recharge, you can do so just about anywhere using the included USB cable and a wall outlet, computer, or portable solar panel." But...Can this be charged by USB power bank (like a backup external battery)?

vinolinIf you can charge it via wall outlet or computer you can definitely charge it via a power bank.

This is a gimmicky filter. Don't get it if you actually want to filter water. A Sawyer mini costs $25 retail, lasts 250,000 gallons, filters just as well (better, actually, since it's removing contaminants, not just killing living things) weighs less and doesn't need electricity. Oh and it's faster.

adeadheadThe more populated trails are becoming progressively more infected with various kinds of viruses. Some viruses, may get in the water. A new sawyer filter is coming out soon but the existing Sawyers to date will not remove viruses. This is where chemicals, or boiling or the UV purifier comes in although the floaties will remain unless you have a means to filter them out.

adeadheadthis kills viruses though. ideally you'd want both filters, or a sawyer + tablets. in places where the water is reasonably safe, you do not need/want the UV purifier though.

No, no, no...Not a built in battery! I bet these things won't hold a charge 5 years from now. Take it to the bank...the Li ion battery would fail way before the lamp does.
Attn: SteriPEN designers... Please build a similar UL unit that we could use with Eneloop AAAs (not CR123) and still recharge via the micro USB port.
