pcastracuccoWell how long do you think it takes to make one? How much do you think the material costs? How much does the machine cost that it was made on? How much did the bearing ball cost? In the world of precision tops, this is not expensive at all because it takes a lot of time and work to make a perfectly balanced top.

billetSPIN"In the world of precision tops" TIL There is a scene for tops I missed out on. Like a real life re-imagining of some sick bey blade fan fic. /Shudder

billetSPINPeople always respond this way... If you turn something in one piece, it'll necessarily be balanced. If you use a 2-spindle lathe with a bar puller and live tooling, you can do this entire piece with no manual intervention besides getting the ceramic ball in. The material I suppose is expensive, but my lab orders bars of OFHC on mcmaster all the time. It's not cheap but it's not super expensive either. I guess copper is a bit of a pain to turn. Yeah... I dunno. Seems like it's on the expensive side.

gazeThis looks to me like CNC machined piece not a hand made work of art. An hour of rent time for 3-axis CNC machine in the US costs about $50-60 plus the programming time. It takes only a few minutes to make each piece this way, plus laser engraving plus inserting the little ceramic ball. A copper rod if bought in bulk is not expensive at all.
I think the cost of this item is justified only by it's uniqueness and the willingness of buyers to pay the asking price. Of course if these toys are made by hands it would be an entirely another matter.
brainwaveHi brainwave, this comment is made at some point during every drop that I've done with Massdrop. This is my sixth top on MD. I'll choose to take it as a complement that this handmade product, turned out one piece at a time in a 12x12' shop, looks like the work of a large, well-equipped machine shop. I work by myself on a small manual lathe. These tops are laser engraved, which cut the cost in half compared to the full custom, hand engraved, tops that I have sold in recent years. If you would like to read lengthy discussions about my process as well as many customer comments on why my product is different than the many CNC tops currently available, you can search the two most recent drops under my name. Thanks for your interest.
