I'm an experienced backpacker and I've never packed a trowel. It probably comes down to the locations I frequent (UT/ID/MT/CO Rocky Mountains usually), but a sturdy rock has always done the trick for me. I just don't see the need to carry around a dedicated digging tool. I was car camping in the desert over the weekend, however, and I admit that my shovel was much appreciated to dig cat holes in that hard ground. I'm a little surprised how many ultralighters carry these....just my 2 cents.
