Is the Global version different as to the measurements it has or is it balanced for the southern hemisphere?
Huh, about $5 cheaper than Amazon, lost when you include shipping fees... how is this a deal?

Buy from massdrop no return not much support and definitly not in the same league as amazon as far as dependable and seemless transactions. Buy a keyboard from sum geeks to show support at md. Haha. Massdrop sucks ass .

For an Australian. It's $12 AUD less than you can buy it for direct from Suunto. https://www.suunto.com/en-au/Products/Compasses/Suunto-MC-2-Global1/Suunto-MC-2-G-Mirror-Compass/?_ga=2.52318313.1356141850.1536541549-688824519.1536541549&_gac=1.86323946.1536541549.Cj0KCQjwidPcBRCGARIsALM--eNmBlqdr5qncRQAXs7nujxJwYE1vsmYZ7do-dQ-fOpXAjZ1YvoAKPEaAvaFEALw_wcB
I think I'll pass until I really need one. This isn't a opportunistic buy price. Caught my eye though as I evaluated it to be a very desirable product some years ago.
Regards the global version, what's confusing are the terms "Inches" and "Centimeters." Online photos of the '2010 model (the so-called 'centimeter' model) shows an inch scale on the right and a mm scale on the left...so...it's both. Online photos of the '1000 model (the so-called 'inch' model) appears to be the USGS model with inch on the left and 1:24000 scale on the right.
I bought one. Went for hiking in Austria. It developed a bubble at 2000m elevation at 10deg Celcius temperature. Avoid this bad product
Serge
Developing bubble is a normal phenomena for compasses. Mine developed bubble as well but then when normal conditions reached it disappeared. So no, it is not a bad product.
US$ 71.24 is the total cost to ship "Suunto MC-2 Global Balanced Metric" to Jakarta, Indonesia. ($49.99 for the compass, $21.25 for shipping&handling) Dang...I already feel dizzy by the shipping cost...

Shipping is high, but this is one of the few times where it is still cheaper than buying retail in Australia.

$39.41 now with Prime, and if you look at other sellers, you can find it for the same price, with Prime, without tax. Win.
$21 shipping... No, thanks.
I have this compass:
  • Northern Hemisphere, Inches (SS004239001). I believe it is the one some are also describing as the USGS one. USGS just refers to the U.S. Geological Survey, producers of the standard "US Topo" maps that most of us use in the US (also slated for budget cuts next year). These maps use imperial measurements. It's easiest to have scales on your compass with the measureing system you are used to but they both will work with a little math althought mixing math with navigation is probably best kept to a minimum in the field. As far as the compass goes it is solidly constructed. There is no play in the bezel and the movement is smooth. Declination setting is easy with the included, and hard to lose key. I like sighting mirrors and having a cutout at the bottom gives me another viewpoint to confirm my bearing. The glow in the dark parts ware useful for night use and the magnifying lens is just big enough to be helpful with aging eyes. All in all a good compass and a good price depending on your needing it now versus needing a couple of bucks later outlook.
Which model uses mils? I don't need a compass with degrees. Or are all of these in degrees?
JamesDrop
Degrees. Check out their website for full specs, though, given your comment, this drop isn't for you.
US$15 for shipping to Canada. ☹️
Ultralight_nerd
How did you determine shipping $. I'm on the fence on this.
Shines
Once you add it to your basket it shows the shipping cost. You can then choose to proceed with the transaction or not. With the USD/CAD rate it works out at CAD$65ish with shipping; which is still CAD$15 cheaper than the same product at MEC (around a 19% discount). Without the shipping it would work out as CAD$44ish, which would be amazing value and a no-brainer buy for most Canadian customers (around a 45% discount). I'm not upset that MD charge for shipping, it's just the $15 shipping feels a lot for such a small item. I would most definitely buy more fromMD if their shipping prices were lower.
For the US is it best to get inches or metric? I'm assuming inches but want to be sure before I buy :)
Also it sounds like the NH model is best as apparently it's slightly more accurate than the global?
Thanks!
Most of the pictures on this drop show 2 compass' in each picture. is this a 2 pack price or single item price?
Xtrmtj85
ONE. (Look closer at the pics and the buying options.)
Hello....Third request. Can you show individual pictures of the four models so we can see the differences of scales, etc? Does anybody at Massdrop read these comments? And also again, what is a USGS model?

That's what they said about their own compasses on their own site at the time of the post. They didn't make any claims about the relative accuracy of hemispherical versus global models made by other manufacturers.
I don't know why they would bother making different products for different hemispheres if there wasn't some difference. It seems like it would be more cost efficient to make one model and sell it for the higher price.
I don't claim to be an expert. I looked at two sites and one was for reference material to understand terms (though there was some interesting information about firing artillery pieces.)
My entire point was that the answers to the questions posed were available from the manufacturer's site while comparing the models side by side. Having looked at their descriptions, I was trying to consolidate the information into something immediately useful for distinguishing the models available during that one drop.
Cxhill
The difference in hemispheres is that a compass made for the Northern Hemisphere will point south in the Southern Hemisphere. It's also less accurate, due to how compasses are constructed.
Second request. Please supply clear individual pictures of each of the four models.
Why would you agree to this drop, and wait and wait and wait. Amazon prime price $43 shipped.
Carhauler
Different strokes for different folks... I always weigh savings vs. wait time when it comes to massdrop.
Shipping at $21 to Australia - forget it should be around $7!!!
Sorry I did not anticipate this drop as I just purchased and received the M3 *no mirror or sighting mechanisms). Although I have found that sighting mechanism are not necessary for general back-country navigation, all of the other features are. The M3 weighs 50.5 grams for comparison shoppers but appears to have larger magnifying glass and no Clinometer so if you are interested in avalanche danger, the M2 just may be your compass. Just passing on some details to help out with the mass amount of choices. This drop looks like a good one for a compass.
Suunto makes so many different models that it gets really confusing when buying. Often, models that you think are the same have different scales and features. You always offer four models when you do these Suunto drops. It is impossible to figure out the differences from the pictures you always use for this drop. Could you PLEASE provide close up, labelled pictures of each of the four models offered? Also, what is different about a "USGS" model from other Suunto models?

Does the manufacturer’s website give you pictures and more info?
Grannypat
They give you better information than Massdrop but it is still confusing if for no other reason than they have SO MANY models. If manufacturers would only limit choices to a reasonable number of well thought out models it would reduce confusion and almost certainly lower costs. For what it is worth, I bought the global usgs model from a different vendor for lower cost and faster delivery.
Any chance the mirror part is removable when not needed?
Miles330
The mirror part adds stability and scratch protection to the important surfaces. removing it would be silly.
Daaa
It's not needed for accurate use and adds 1oz. Not removing it might be silly.

@PeterK ,
Has there ever been any discussion of carrying the M-3 series of compasses from Suunto. For those of us who are ounce counters, the M-3 is an ounce lighter (and a bit more compact). An M-3G would be a welcome addition to MassDrop. :)

Oops sorry

Thanks for the heads up.
I just want to point out that this really isn't a great deal. I can purchase this for less on amazon and have it in two days... My understanding is the whole point is to buy as a group to have buying power to drop the price below standard market price but that is not the case with this drop.
T3Knical5urg3
Seems like a hair cheaper than the sMae model on Amazon, but with the shipping fee it does come out similar.
Jayz7170
It does come out similar, but....you would have it in two days

There is a discrepancy between the compasses pictured and the models offered upon joining. The two compasses pictured are a global model and the northern hemisphere USGS model - you can see the model designations in the pictures. I would like the USGS model but when I went to join the drop that model was not listed as a selection. The MC-2 DL IN/NH is NOT the USGS model pictured. I would also note that the MSRP quoted is incorrect - it is higher than Suunto itself charges on their' website. I need a good sighting compass as I have misplaced my Silva Ranger but I am concerned that if I join this drop I will not receive the pictured model.
LongHawl
This drop is for the USGS model. The description page references USGS, but the checkout options could be clearer. The options are now updated along with the MSRP. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Overpriced, I got a lot better at the overstock army's store. And I've seen something close to it for 6$
Hi again, please can you check your shipping cost to Australia for this item? $21.75 for a compass is a crazy cost, and based on the shipping cost for other small items (e.g. $8.75 from memory) is an error. Thanks.

Same to London. Insane.

Any movement on this one Massdrop - please check, I suspect there's an error
