These speakers (as far as I know) were engineered by Jon Lane at The Audio Insider, now Chane Music Cinema. Jon has created some excellent loudspeakers in his day. I have the Arx A3rx-c and they are wonderful. I have no reason to doubt the excellence of the Swan line. These are far cheaper than some competitors in their class like the Audioengine A5+, which I also own -- and are also excellent. The frequency response for these speakers is admirable for the price, certainly better than the Audioengine A2. I would have no reservations about paying $150 for these speakers. Just my two cents. If you have any questions, make sure to contact Jon at Chane Music Cinema. He's a great guy and would be happy to answer any questions you have.

Acidtrip69There is a problem with your desire- you won't get a "great" subwoofer if you're on a tight budget. You could get the Audioengine S8, but even at the discounted price Massdrop has offered them for, it's still too expensive for what it is, in my opinion. I haven't heard it though. You could go for a low end Polk sub, but those are better for movies, as the bass isn't going to be as tight or defined as a higher-end sub, which is more desirable for music. I wish I could offer more help in this area, but I have an SVS PB-1000 in my main 2.1 setup in the living room and it's awesome. But it's massive and $500 and I wouldn't suggest it for a desk setup. Best of luck!!

Acidtrip69I own these speakers, personally I never needed a subwoofer however using the A5+ from Audioengine a sub was needed.

Acidtrip69Pioneer SW-8 is a fine 8" sub for music in a desktop setting. Can be found at Newegg for $75 on sale often enough.

yokkenWould you say that these sound as good as the A5+ speakers? I do only mean sound, not factoring in price. Also, would you say that these are better for the price than the A5+ for the price of $320?

motionsWell the guys on reddit made me hook up my swans again, I get the same feeling as when I first bought them.
search
Might even start using them again with the S8 Sub which I haven't done before
This is my reply to someone else
"It has been a while since I've used my swans but i've got them set up together atm. I've forgotten how good these are without any EQ modifications and without a sub.
Bass > D1080-iv
Mids > D1080-iv/A5+
The mids on the A5+ are still good but I believe the mids on the D1080-iv is a lot better
Treble > A5+
You can increase the treble on the D1080-iv by about 3db but I forgot at what frequency ranges.
The bass knob increases the ~50hz-~250hz range by about 3db although I keep this at 12 o" clock.
Also for build quality I think you really get what you pay for, the A5+ definitely wins in build quality and aesthetics"

hyperlinkedLooks like a missed a couple replies, my thoughts are on page 2 if you haven't read them yet. I forgot how good they are and I'm actually using my swans again with the S8 sub. Although after listening to more stuff (like movies, anime etc). I hear that the mids are definitely different and may sound good or bad depending on what you are listening to.
For example I loaded up some anime (which is usually low quality audio for non-BD) and the voices sounded dull (not sure if that is the right word to use lol) compared to the A5+. But if I load up some Djent/Prog Metal which in this case was Shades of Black - Ocean: The Prelude it sounds better than the A5+. Listening to the album Odyssey by Yngiwe Malmsteen the A5+ sounds better than the D1080-iv
