Founded in 2003 by California fashion designer Shu-Jen Lin, Taccia is known for its unorthodox pen designs. And the Covenant line, available in fountain and ballpoint styles, is no different. The fountain pen is equipped with a threaded cap that extends nearly the entire length of the barrel, doubling as a protective sheath. At the bottom of the hand-turned resin barrel, another set of threads allows the 4.8-inch cap to be securely posted. But at more than half an ounce, the posted cap adds significant heft—not to mention nearly 2 inches of additional length—to an otherwise well-balanced pen.
Note: At checkout, you can choose a pen color from Jet Black, Midnight Breeze, and Parchment Swirl, and a nib size from Fine, Medium, and Broad. You’ll also have the option of adding a matching retractable ballpoint pen (+ $59).
The two-tone nib is stamped with the Taccia logo and features engravings along the edges. While not considered a flex nib, the pen’s partially gold-plated nibs offer a bit more line variation than other stainless steel nibs. The Covenant comes equipped with an ink converter, which is also compatible with international standard cartridges. Accenting the pen is chrome-plated trim (or, on the black model, gold-plated trim), with a thick band and pocket clip adorning the cap and three slim bands adorning the body.
The Covenant is also available as a retractable ballpoint pen. It features a smooth twist mechanism and uses a low-viscosity German Easy Flow Ink refill. It’s made of the same marbled, hand-turned resin as the fountain pen, though it’s considerably shorter than its nib-bearing counterpart.
