Gunpla is short for "Gundam Models"

Also very much about workmanship. However appeal is greatly limited without the context that Gundam is the biggest anime franchise in Japan. Story of my childhood.

I'm gonna file RC semis with stamp collecting and trainspotting as hobbies of which I just don't see the appeal. RC bashers, crawlers, drift cars etc. I get it. They go fast and there is action. This is large, slow (relatively), and very limited in what it does. Can someone explain this?
