I bought this lens elsewhere recently and used it with a Nikon d3400 as an all-in-one lens for a trip overseas. I enjoyed using it, but it's not a lens without issues. Skill level wise, I would consider myself very much an amateur photographer. I played around with it before my trip and thought it worked fairly well as a macro lens. It only required a short distance of maybe 30cm or so to be able to focus on close objects when fully extended. I didn't get much of a chance to try this out in real applications though. My main application for this lens was to pick out far away details when I was shooting from up high, think the observation deck of a skyscraper. I had a lot of fun using it this way. I didn't use a tripod with it. I'd say my main issues with this lens are:
  • The autofocus starts going a little haywire at longer focal lengths and when trying to focus on things far in the distance. However I'd imagine this to be a problem with any lens, and since the d3400 has such few focus points that may have exacerbated this issue.
  • The lock is only for keeping the lens closed when collapsed. This sucks because when the lens is unlocked and pointing down, the lens will sometimes open of its own accord.
  • The lens seemed to resist me adjusting the focus while the camera was in autofocus mode. This might have been a rogue setting but I don't think that was the case.
The lens itself is quite long when fully extended and so the VC is quite necessary without a tripod. I wasn't taking a lot of shots on this trip so didn't get a good read on how much battery it used. All in all I was satisfied with the lens. I would post sample pictures but unfortunately I haven't gotten around to pulling them off my camera.
