In case anyone wants to use internal mic for recording, I would like to share some experience with DR100 Mk2 for reference. DR100 MK2's internal mic performs horribly (external mics are totally fine). Since DR40 is a lower end product compared with DR100, I assume the recording quality is no better. For anyone who seriously want a small on-the-go voice recorder. Zoom provides many great choices in terms of superb recording quality and reasonable price tags. I am currently using a Zoom as my recorder for events. It works much better than the DR100 MK2 I sold off a while ago. There are a lot of samplings on YouTube. Go checkout those sample clips instead of just read about the sound.
If you just want to use it as DAP, go for DR100 MK2, it can be bought for around or less than $199 recently. DR100 MK2 has great PO and LO. I will say it is the king (and the only useable one as DAP) in Tascam product line except for the recently released models that I have not played with. But for DR100 MK2, the PO is very warm, LO is better but still a little warm. I don't think it fits everyone. While looking for DAP, please stay away from Zoom.

chris.ywI'm still on the fence about this drop, so I did a little research based on chris.yw's post. The Zoom H4n is generally seen as the closest competitor product to the DR-40, and there are several comparison videos on YouTube (search "DR-40 vs H4n" without the quotes). Here are a few links:
Tascam DR-40 Vs Zoom H4n what's right for you? - DSLR FILM NOOB
Outdoor Video Gear + Audio Recorder Showdown: Zoom H4n vs. Tascam DR-40
Audio Test: Zoom H4n vs. Tascam DR-40

Note that in the last video, there is slight clipping on the Tascam test recording using the external microphone. This is because the Tascam was being used as a preamp feeding into a digital camera. The on-board recording using the external mic (on the same video) does not exhibit clipping.

SkipOrtensIt think it is helpful for you to checkout the comparison below. The ambient noise test is worthy looking at.

chris.ywI can't say for the 40 but the 05 and 07 both have onboard mics that are at least as good as the Zooms. Of course that leaves the 40 right in the middle, but I would suspect it would be good because it is much more pocketable like the lower models.

chris.ywThis man is right. The tascam really sucks. If you use it with a great deal of xlr lav mics, you'll have a very annoying ticking sound in every recording. TASCAM is aware of this issue and doesn't care, choosing instead to blame the user. Decide whether or not you want to give your business to a company like this.
You can see them avoiding the issue, which could easily be fixed with a firmware update in their own FAQ: http://tascam.com/product/dr-40/faqs/
