I own the Onkyo (similar unit except different OPAMP IIANM, sounds warmer). Why you would want this:
1. Small portable unit to carry around (I carry mine to the office) 2. You want to bypass an Apple device's built-in DAC and AMP to better power bigger cans (anything up to 250 ohm)
The chassis is almost 99% metal, with some rubber parts to grip the surface that it's on. Very sturdy though the sharp edges can be uncomfortable to hold and may damage your phone if you're not careful. Sound wise, it's very clean when used with headphones (no experience with IEMs, sorry), and provides ample volume to my Beyerdynamic T90 and Oppo PM3. I mostly hook it up to my Macbook Pro and occasionally iPhone 6 Plus. I paid $199 for mine so at $149, it's a bargain if you want a portable unit. Just don't expect to drive big planars and 600 Ohm dynamics. Those will need a higher powered amps.
