Anybody have some upgrade suggestions for this turntable? I'm thinking of just doing a Grado black and a cork slipmat. Also would like someones opinion about weather its worth getting a preamp for my hi-fi set up. Currently planning on using the phono preamp on my Nakamichi reciever-1 but I am not super knowledgeable about TT stuff as this is my first one.
Clehmanj1What cartridge is on it now? The picture looks like ATE95....That's not a terrible cartridge. As first "big" investment upgrade, I'd try to get an external phono amp before a cartridge. A cork or leather slipmat will help but I wouldn't consider it "major, save you're $$" type thing, more of an add on like an antistatic brush & Onzow stylus cleaner which should also be purchased if playing records..

BeerCanChickenI believe it is a Numark gt or something in that price range, It is definitely not an ATE95 like the standard version of the turntable ships with.

BeerCanChickenIt doesn't sound terrible, but it could definitely be upgraded.

Clehmanj1I wouldn't upgrade (or spend extra money on) this turntable at all.
If you invest in a preamp, you'll make that purchase once, it will work with any new turntable you buy. Buying a cartridge is sunk money you won't be able to move to something new (yes you could remove the new cartridge, but you'll probably buy a much better turntable in the future with a much better cartridge in it already).
Honestly, the quality of the cartridge installed in this is likely exactly as good as the rest of the turntable. You likely wouldn't notice much sound difference spending $50 to $75 on that Grado or any other cartridge. Save your money and ditch the turntable in the future for a better one - in the $400-500 range. Pro-Ject is a great starting place for that search.
You'll get a few years of great fun listening to vinyl with this turntable. Just leave it as is.
