I see a lot of people saying that this isn't as good as other available TT's. What could I get for the drop price that outperforms this? I know that at the MSRP there are better, but what about at the $150 price point?

iamlilysdadThe U-Turn Orbit Basic is probably worth the extra $30. I have the Teac TN-300 turntable, and it's pretty decent for a secondary system, but not the best. The USB audio output has never worked (just use the built in pre out), and the cartridge is far worse than the ortofon red that I have on my Pro-Ject table (which BTW, has problems of its own).
Bottom line, the TN-200 or any of the turntables I listed, if setup properly, won't trash your records, which is more than can be said for a Crosley or any number of other ultra cheap tables. With new vinyl prices being high, the last thing you need is a $100 player that eats $39 vinyl.
I'd personally go for the U-Turn, but the Teac isn't a bad turntable either.

lucpaquet123True. If you have a preamp with a phono-pre built in, it's not a concern though. It can also be considered an advantage to not have the preamp built in, since almost ANY outboard phono pre will be higher quality than the one built in to the Teac.

iamlilysdadGo to a local used audio store that also does repairs so you know you’ll be getting something in good operational condition and look for a Dual in the later 12xx series that is belt drive, not idler drive. Then throw a Grado Black on there and you’ll be in heaven. My favorite table of the Duals is the 510. All the Duals have very good arms and were manufactured in Germany to a very high standard. Many of them were originally fitted with either Shure or Ortofon cartridges that are still considered fairly high quality.
