Guys, I'm quite new to headphone DAC/Amps but would like to get one with balanced output to get an HD 800 or 800S in the near future. Is this any better than the Fostex HP-A4BL with 4 pin balanced output?
I thought the Fostex might be a good one at $399 MSRP - which a drop could bring to a very affordable level - so I added it to some of the polls here to be voted on. This TEAC however also looks very interesting and might seriously consider it even though the balanced outs are pre-amp. How would these two DAC/Amps compare in features and quality against one another?
Here is a link to the the specs on the product site of the HP-A4BL: http://www.fostexinternational.com/docs/products/HP-A4BL.shtml#content-3-tab-tab

Solidus22The Fostex is a one stop deal for balanced HP amp/dac, with it's balanced HP out. As you said the TEAC will need another balanced amp to achieve the same thing. The TEAC has dual mono HP amps with 100mw+100mw ,[32ohms] the Fostex is 300mw combined into 32ohms about 33% more power, which may or may not make a difference when you drive your HD 800s. The Fostex is definitely a better deal in paper, but in use I have no clue. For what it worth I bought the TEAC at the last drop, and very happy with it.

TheHunThanks for your reply, the UD-301 looks really attractive as part of your setup!
Glad you brought up the power difference, I guess it gives a bit of extra room if need be. I noticed in the specs that the UD-301 supports 32-bit quantization via USB, while the Fostex HP-A4BL maxes out at 24-bit. On the other hand, the Fostex supports 11.2MHz DSD while the TEAC goes up to only 5.6MHz. Would any of these be a clear advantage, or are they just specs that have no real world implications/noticeability to the listener?
As of right now I am still debating between these two. The UD-301 looks much more attractive as a unit, but because the Fostex is an all-in-one for headphones I'm leaning towards it slightly more. The smaller size is also an advantage in my case.
Anyways, I would still love to see opinions on quality and use from anyone who has experience with these brands.

Solidus22I wouldn't sweat the specs of 32 bit VS 24 or or DSD rates they are meaningless for end users. None of the DAC chips can go beyond 20 bit or so when it comes to their actual measured noise and dynamic range performance, and there is the analog section which will not be better either . Those specs are for advertisements Yes people claim all kinds of differences with sighted comparisons, but there is no real DBTs to back those up. Thanks for the kind words. (Te is Magyar vagy? )

TheHunThanks, that puts my mind at ease. I will be refraining from taking those differences into consideration then. With that said, now I'm leaning even more towards the Fostex, unless someone here convinces me the TEAC is superior in use and quality.
For anyone interested to get a drop happen, feel free to show your interest for the HP-A4BL with a vote at https://www.massdrop.com/vote/Fostex-HP-A4-DAC-AMP

Solidus22I wouldn't worry about the "feature" specs too much (sampling rates/bit depth) since there's a lot more SNR headroom in basic Redbook than either of Fostex or TEAC DACs are capable of producing. Of course you have to take the SNR/THD ratings with a grain of salt, but I'd say those are a bit more important than what DSD sampling rate or PCM bit depth the devices can support. With that, the TEAC is probably the better device (if you go off the spec sheet).
