This is a good dac/amp but I paid $250 for the ud-301 and this is better but not $500 Better. Massdrop is smoking crack to imagine that this will sell at this price.

PopPopPopI understand your statement, but it does sell for 999$ everywhere... and people must buy it. So for someone looking to buy this specific unit, it is a decent price. That being said, I believe there are a ton of better headphones amp/dac's out there at this price range.

PopPopPopThe UD-501 (discontinued) is the unit to have if you like TEAC gear. It's not a jack-of-all-trades, just tries to be a great DAC, which it is. It's a better DAC than this one, the 301, or the stuff from Schiit, and you can get a 501 for $400. Easy choice really.

BlueSkiesWhy do you say that the 501 is better as a dac? What makes it better?

XannenLooking at the design, construction, and internal components, the way I see it the 501 was designed from the ground-up to be a top-tier DAC that can be used with headphones.. but only if you have to. If one wants a headphone amp, that's a different job and they make the HA-501 for that purpose. When these 2 pieces are assembled together, you have a stellar "component-based" system of matching pieces.
