Hi all, I was on the fence about this drop yesterday and thought I had a few more hours but apparently missed this drop. I was trying to get a little more info but the website didn't provide much. I was wondering if some of you that own this might be able to help me out, here are my questions:
1. What is the difference between this and the Technivorm Moccamaster CDGT? Is it just the carafe design/hotplate (obviously the CDGT wouldn't get much from a hotplate with the vacuum insulated carafe)?
2. Would either of these units be appropriate for making ~20 oz of coffee (instead of the full 40 to 45 oz)?
3. What kind of filter does this take/does it take a filter or is that somehow built in? Could I use one of the KONE by ablebrewing?
4. Finally - How would these coffee makers compare to pour over using a kettle and the KONE filter (if anyone has a comparison)?
Thanks for the help! Just looking for something that's maybe quicker/easier than pour over for days when I'm short on time in the morning.

Warlock9831) Technivorm's Naming Convention: KB = Rectangular Body CD = Circular Body T = Thermal Carafe G = Auto Drip Stop S = Small (32 oz) Grand = Large (64 oz)
Heating and brew elements in both units are identical. Standard size carafe (i.e. unspecified in the name) is 40 oz.
The hot plate on the Moccamaster is very well regarded. This video shows a direct comparison that strongly favors the hot plate and glass carafe over the thermal carafe after one hour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pe9vo1haxwk
2) Yes, both can make half pots which I plan on doing regularly once I receive my unit. Technivorm machines use a pulsating drip that allows the coffee to bloom so it's not just an immediate drip through or a pre-set pre-infusion. This means that the strength of the coffee is not dependent on the amount being brewed and you should just be able to scale the amount of water and coffee equally.
3) #4 paper filters. Technivorm does not recommend the use of metal filters though I believe many do anyway. Can't use a Kone.
4) Don't have a comparison but these are widely considered to be the best drip brewers ever made and can be considered an investment as they are made to be serviceable. It sounds like you really like your pour over though. Have you looked at the Chemex Ottomatic? They're hard to find but could be a good option for you.

mjsonneThank you so much for the reply! I appreciate all the information! It actually looks like the CDGT might fight a chemex under it without much issue - so I'll keep that in mind. I looked into the Chemex Ottomatic after you mentioned it - looks super nice!! I'll keep an eye out for them.
Thanks again - this is awesome!

Warlock983Happy to help!
Not sure if the Chemex and the CDGT would be the best fit though. Could be a lot of compromises. No hot plate and no longer would be a pour over unless you had a lot of space between the drip head and the carafe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDajZXH-QFI
However, the Chemex and the Bonavita seem to be a popular hack! Essentially the "poor man's" Ottomatic! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIoG1GKjtfQ

mjsonneI use the KB741 (the silver one they put away) to make the water for French press. It works *perfect*. I also use it every day for the last ten years to brew normal coffee. Also *perfect*.
