Is it possible to use this rod at less than maximum length? Most of our Southern streams are still surrounded by treeline.

LamarrYou can drop the lowest telescoping segment into the handle and choke-up on it, but it's not really ideal - will rattle around and impact your casting and fish-fighting. Probably better to go with a shorter fixed-length rod or an adjustable "zoom" rod if you really need it. That being said, I've found that I can fish most streams with a rod that is longer than I originally thought prudent. With this style of fishing you'll have a much shorter back-cast (and it's oriented more up and back than straight back) than traditional fly fishing. It's also pretty easy to adjust your cast (side-arm, bow & arrow, etc to account for overhanging foliage or tight spaces). I fish densely vegetated waters and generally use 9-11 ft (270-330 cm) rods for smaller creeks, and 12-13+ ft (360-390+ cm) for larger streams and rivers. Hope that helps.
LamarrNo you'll want to get a shorter rod like the Cascade or Sierra.

LamarrI agree that if you have the option, buy the shorter rod but... by accident when I stepped on the lowest telescoping section and broke it (easy to order a replacement piece), I found that keeping that section in the handle and using a short piece of fabric tape (medical type) to secure it at the junction makes it very stable and functional (and shorter). If you're like me and have a limited budget and want the most flexible rod, these drops are a great value. The Sierra does come up periodically but you can use this rod. Also use a shorter line for heavily treed streams and use a slingshot cast. Point the rod where you want to cast and pull the fly back towards you bending the rod tip. Let go of the fly and it'll shoot forward without ever having to back cast. Only works with a line shorter than the rod but very effective for small streams.
