I never fished before, but though a few times on starting with it. I like that this rod compacts so small. Would it be advised to start with such a rod or just take a standard 30$ cheap one ?

TomDeVis_comThis is not a standard fishing setup. This is an alternative to fly fishing that has become popular in the West as of late. You can Google it to find out the complete history of Tenkara. As a life-time fishing hobbiest I personally would NOT recommend spending this kind of money on a Tenkara rod unless you for sure know a.) you enjoy fishing and b.) more importantly you enjoy this style of fishing. Fly fishing is a very different experience compared to picking up your standard baitcaster or spinning combo and driving to the lake or river. It's also a much more significant investment as you will need flies, boots and possibly even waders depending on where and how you intend to fish. That is of course in addition to the rod package and state liscence.
Honestly just get a cheap spinning combo from any sporting goods store and go out a few times and see if fishing is for you. If you really need a compact rod, there are several cheap, specialty compact travel rods out there to try.

TomDeVis_comI would almost recommend trying fishing with a cheaper rod/reel first to see if you enjoy fishing at all and get a chance to learn the aspects of fishing (catch & release, cleaning fish you keep, etc.). I'd hate to drop $100 on a rod to find out that I hate fly-fishing. I'm sure with the right experience, these rods are a great tool for fishing, but maybe not for beginners

TomDeVis_comWell my advice is to start with another alternative as well. I don't know where you live but if you have access to lakes or canals, or the seashore there are alot of novice rigs that work relatively well and don't cost enough to brake the bank. Flyfishing has become something that I don't recognize any more. The cost of outfitting yourself for trout can cost over a grand. Way over. Tenkara is rod/line/fly. That's it. You can fish from a boat a tube or wade. The way to take alot of fish is to find fish and have a good technique/presentation. The setup in question is, in my opinion, a good deal for what you get. But if you have never fishes before I would find someone to take you fishing with them or join a club to find out if you like it . Good Luck
