Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. When I plug it in, everything works perfectly for a short period of time (seconds to a minute), then the trackpoint and mouse button keys suddenly stop working, while the main keyboard continues to work. Occasionally when I plug it in, the trackpoint and mouse button keys won't work at all. I've tried it on different computers (both Windows and Linux) with the same results.
It seems like there's a short somewhere, so I actually lined the inside of the case with electrical tape. Pretty much any part of the keyboard where a solder joint or the pcb could be in contact with the case is covered. Still having the problem.
Any ideas? Thanks for reading!
edit/update: I seem to have resolved the problem. Here's what I did in case anyone else experiences similar issues: I pulled the board apart and reapplied the electrical tape a little bit more carefully, then reset the two switches that control how the mouse button keys function (thinking that maybe the switches weren't pushed far enough to make a solid connection). Not sure which one of these fixed the problem, but everything seems to be working now - knock on wood.
