Some years back, my first true  "quality"   shave  kit  was a sub 100.00 starter set,. And at the time 100.00$  was not inexpensive like it is more-so  today The razor, brush, stainless steel stand, drip saucer that stand sets on and an actual quality brand soap was all included.  Not knowing the difference, I opted to save 25-50 $ by going with the stock nylon bristle brush. Back then with mostly magazines for shopping the brushes were MUCH more expensive. Too, given I went to college for chemistry, I knew the new nylons could stand up much better over the years,, or so I thought. (  Given  that I have always used true horse hair shoe brushes, I realized how foolish it was later on.)
One day , talking with my tailor during a final finish/fitting  measurements,  I asked him what he used. ( From our years together I knew he was old school.) He told me that a silver badger hair brush was the only way to go even if you had to save up for it. He said he had the same one and the same straight razor for years. Even the same soap cup because it was just the right size to work the lather up. Going with a silver badger brush was the best thing I ever did.
The reason silver badger is more desirable and premium is it comes only from the neck area. (Think true horsehide cordovan that comes only from the rump area of the horse) THAT is why it is always a premium price compared to others. It is more durable and, at least for me, I could feel the difference working up a lather on and into my face when I first switched, I still recall the difference.
If you aren't sold or unsure and don't know anyone who uses a badger hair shave brush..... at least gamble the extra for the entry level badger hair. It will be one of the best decisions you ever made.    Respects- John
