One ugly keyboard :x
Few questions before I commit. 1) Does the Aviator connect with a USB or PS2 cable?. 2)There seems to be no difference between the price of a ten-keyless, or full size. Is that correct?. 3) The Fender Amp jewels are usually configurable. Are they blue for this drop?. 4) Lastly, the option for painted stems adds no additional cost at checkout. Is this correct?. Thanks

Last question. Is there no choice of font for the keys?. Their site offers four types.
Wozzathelad
Unfortunately for this drop we are not offering any other fonts.
Hey guys, we spoke to Datamancer and they said they will actually be able to ship out earlier than expected on this drop.
I have adjusted the fulfillment time accordingly.
Exciting news group! We’re happy to report that all of the orders have been shipped out and are now on the way to you! Please allow 24-48 hours for tracking to get into the shipper's system and start updating.
If there’s anything else we can do to make your Massdrop experience better, feel free to contact us via “Contact Support” button in your transaction page: https://www.massdrop.com/transactions
We have some good news to share with everyone. Our vendor has reached out to provide us with an update on the status of production. Production is moving along very well, and the vendor is confident that they will be able to easily ship before the estimated ship date of 10/12.
Expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 9/14 or sooner if something comes up.
Great news group! We placed the order for the The Aviator Keyboard shortly after the drop ended.
Our vendor will be preparing it for shipment.
The moment we receive confirmation regarding the shipping schedule from the vendor, we will provide you all with updated information.
Expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 8/19 or sooner if something comes up.
plz I need this in my life
That looks so awesome!
I think the biggest detractor for me on this keyboard is the lack of proper stabilized keys; instead of a full shift or enter key you just get a little nub. At this price point I feel that there's no reason why they can't have a wire stab like the spacebar.
Guys, keep in mind the market for the keyboard and the fact that DM is a small company. Some of the audience is people who can afford expensive things and want to show that fact, thus allowing markup. It is an expensive keyboard to make (from what I've seen and read) and needs a price tag that allows a profit.
I'm a Node.JS guru living in SoMa, but in my off time I enjoy doing some PC Gaming and discussing ethics in Gaming journalism, online. For that won't accept anything less than the best mechanical keyboard.
It definitely had a hefty cost with its MSRP of $725, but every time I sit down in my Aeron (bought new, natch) to play the Star Citizen Dogfighting Module or write my daily anti-SJW activism tweets on my overclocked, 144hz, 4K monitor, and I lay my fingers on these premium Cherry MX Blues and feel their click (more satisfying than any other keyboard on the market), I am content.

Someone would have to blow more than my sarcasm meter to get me to spend $500+ on a keyboard. j/k LOL :)

Very detailed and helpful review indeed, I'd very much like to know more about your OC'd 4K 144hz monitor please.
pay me $574.98 and i'll mail you an old typewriter and do something useful with the rest of the money
These switch options are not for the retro-minded enthusiasts, but for weakly toddlers and fans of laptop keyboards! Wher' da clears, da greens? Flexibility should be entangled with a price tag like that.
I see a lot of nerdy shit on here, honestly I can't complain, I'm a huge nerd myself.
However, this gruesome keyboard really takes the cake. Does it come with a collection of fedoras to wear whilst using it?
Hmmm. Gorgeous keyboard, or it would be, were it not for the blue on the Cherry switches.

Regarding comment 9 on page 1 Datamancer might even paint it pink if you ask nice.
Nabbed the sample unit here at the office to play with. I expected the round keys to be more difficult to type with, but I got used to it after about 5-10 minutes of use and am maintaining close to my regular typing speed.
The thing that's slowing me down a bit is the small Shift keys. My fingers are fairly long so it's not too much of a hassle, but it's a little bit more of a reach than I'm used to with a standard keyboard. I expect I'd get used to it over time.
Speaking as a newbie-level enthusiast of mechanical keyboards, it's a unique looking click-clacky thing that's up my alley. I've been pretty happy with my Deck 87 Francium Pro (minus the icky font), but this is a really cool piece I'd be excited to type on.

But it looks so cheap and nasty - much more so in that picture!
If this were a modern buckling spring keyboard I'd be in. Looks are what this board is for, and nothing ruins it like the little blue sliders on the switches.
Can I trade 2x varmillo's, 2x custom aluminum varmillo cases, 1x ducky 69 fire edition for this lol ... would look amazing with my tanker desk!

A man, a word, so it seems and should be.
Email sent :-)
Not my style at all really, but the Fender jewels are a nice touch. Guitar nerds are good people. Hope this drop goes well for everyone.
blah blah, hand built, blah blah premium materials, blah blah art, blah blah I don't care if it has pearl inlay and a gold space bar its still too damn much.
tyler555
Hi tyler555,
what a wonderfull coincidence, just yesterday i was looking for some freelancers for some projects.
blah, blah, engineering, you wont get paid, blah, blah, prototyping, you wont get paid, blah, blah, tooling, you wont get paid, blah, blah, hands of gold and a brain of a genius for precise handcrafting needed, i guarantee a slaves wage.
It seems you could be perfect, maybe we can work out something.
Makami
but it's not even all that special. As was mentioned it looks like a novelty not a work of art. I don't see any hand carving or airbrushing. It's a hunk of metal cutout by a cnc machine with no fillets or chamfers.
Too bad it;s not buckling spring or something xD
It's unfortunate that the switch options are so super-limited for something so exquisite.
for almost 600$ youd think there would be free shipping
What a beautiful thing, just like me
I own the Machinist, from Datamancer. I actually use it at work every day as my primary keyboard. Im a Systems Engineer so i do alot of programming, and have not had any issues using this keyboard as my daily.

Pyrot1c
now THAT is the one I was hoping they would drop. We are doing a build that NEEDS that keyboard, but it was too much so we just went with the keycaps instead. Datamancer, we would love to use your keyboards exclusively for our custom rigs. Is there any way of working something out?
CustomGamingSolutions
We can do that, contact us at Marketing@Datamancer.com.
Like it's said in youtube: it's a luxury item, it for richs, not for geeks.
OlivierPons
those gon keyboards could get pretty pricey.

all these niche markets.
A story:
I looked at this keyboard today. I looked out my window. There was a bird flying, graceful through the air as the currents played through its feathers. Somewhere, the chatter of a perpetually angry squirrel. The bird drifted high, and tensed. I imagine he breathed a sigh of relief as his shit plastered my car. I stared.
"... If only I had the Aviator."
I looked back to the keyboard and realized I could pay off a good chunk of my shitty car with that kind of money.
It's a nice car, if not for that bird.
Thank you.
I'd like to add that this is a beautiful keyboard visually, though I personally don't think it'd be comfortable for use in a typical setting.
Ryker
It's unique enough that it takes some getting used to, but afterwards it's a dream. I personally type 6+ hours a day programming with it. It is definitely a beautiful keyboard
PoorBob
It's functional art.
I think that's very much the vein this keyboard lives in, and I'm glad to hear after some adjustment, it's also an awesome keyboard to use!
And PoorBob, thanks for the insightful reply!
Dangit, linus' review really made me want one. This looks super fun.
If y'all are just interested in the keycaps, it appears that Datamancer sells them alone. http://www.datamancer.com/cart/datamancer-typewriter-keys-p-276.html
I LOOOOOOOOVE datamancer. But this doesnt seem like much of a deal? Maybe if they knocked it to 499.99 I would have bit
