Showcasing the craftsmanship of two historic English brands, The British Belt Company and Clayton & Sons, this bifold wallet makes a handsome addition to your daily carry. The British Belt Co Read More
Received my order (a gift for my father-in-law), a wallet in cordovan with burgundy color. Quality is good. Leather is quite thin (a plus imo). I also ordered the comparable Ashland Johny the Fox in shell cordovan (for myself), which is on it's way, so I'll be able to compare the two directly. At this point, the quality of the BBC wallet is good enough for me to plan on ordering another one when the next massdrop opportunity arises.
SanDiegoDropI received the Ashland Johnny the Fox in natural cordovan. In terms of construction and quality, the two are quite comparable (I like the BBC construction just very very slightly better, it looks better finished), and both were worth the money. The Horween cordovan has the reputation, but the British cordovan isn't far behind. The Ashland wallet does happen to have a big fat "Genuine Horween Cordovan" stamp on the inside portion of the cash compartment -- which no one else but me will ever see -- wow it looks nice (I understand that whether you get the stamp or not is really just a matter of luck). Overall, I really like both the British Belt Co wallet and the Ashland wallets about the same. I would buy both again, but how many wallets does a person really need or use? I don't foresee myself needing another one for quite a while.
Received mine yesterday, and I'm very happy to report I am very impressed. As few details were nagging at me but I took the plunge nonetheless, as follows:
I wasn't sure that, in the card slots below what you can see, if there was fabric or some other material. Happily - the very nice, soft leather lining both sides of the bill pocket and line the credit card pockets. Germane to me is that there is no fabric in this wallet.
It wasn't clear if, in addition to the 8 credit card pockets, there were the so-called hidden pockets from the center of the wallet.... The answer is YES - those pockets are open and available for use.
Some others wondered if the edges were finished. the answer to this is an absolute YES as well
This wallet is very nicely made and I'm quite stunned frankly they were able to hit that price point with a wallet whose exterior and interior pockets are all shell cordovan. The Ashland wallets at 2x the price on Massdrop only have the exterior cordovan.
I bought a British Belt Co, well, 'belt' (go figure) and was quite impressed so I rolled the dice.
Other observations:
My current wallet is a "neiman marcus" (looks like a Bosco) bifold "slim" (Ebay purchase). The British Belt Co. wallet is definitely a bit thicker, likely due to the thicker leather and use of leather instead of fabric between card slots. Once in my back pocket for a period of time, I'm sure it'll compress a bit. It definitely needs breaking in.
With the lined leather, full use of cordovan for exterior/interior bits, and finished edges, this is a much more classy piece. I'm sure other brands will hold up just fine, but they have a more informal, rustic (dare I say unfinished?) look that appealing in its own right.
Should I be concerned that the interior layer doesn't fully reach the top or the bottom of the outer layer? I'm worried that the top and bottom might fold over more easily without the reinforcement provided by another layer stitched over it.
Thanks for the reply! I'm guessing this means that the top edge would likely curve inwardly a little over time (more so than if the interior were not slightly lowered) but not to the extent that it would damage the functionality of the wallet.
Does this have the interior "slip pockets"? BBC's bifold from their website do have these but it wasn't stated on the description for this listing.
Is the wallet all leather (except for the stitching of course)? For example, many bifolds (including my current leather bifold) have a cloth in the interior pockets that are out of view unless you look into the pocket. Sadly, this is what tends to fail on these wallets.
jjdgI believe the interior card slots are shell cordovan as well, only the inner bill pocket lining is calf skin.
From a previous comment: "The actual lining on the inside of the bill pocket is full grain calf lined -- I interpreted Wilsoninov's question differently and was referring to the interior of the wallet itself (when you open it -- the divisions/compartments/fabrication of the inside)"
Can MD add more photos please? I can't tell if the leather edges are finished or raw like Ashland's (although they supposedly changed that recently). And a shot of the interior would be nice, since the lining isn't shell cordovan.
People are holding off on this wallet because they joined the drop for ashland cordovan wallets. If this drop starts at$100 then I would be very interested. Just bought 3 british belt co belts but at this price for wallet I would have to pass.
