See tops a lot on here. could someone tell me what the point of these are ? Just cool desk toys or what ?

BigEdMustaphaIt's a toy, but there's also a nice artisan quality about the custom tops you can buy made of damascus and the like. I like the different designs and how they all spin a little differently depending on shape, material and base you're spinning on.
I love seeing how long I can get them spinning. The most I've gotten out of a quality top was 7.5 minutes. Of course, I've only been at it for a couple months now, but with practice, I should get a few of mine to the 10 minute mark. (Also, this is something I do when I watch movies or have a spare second at work. I don't just sit there and spin tops all day.)

Someone will always ask "What's the point?" And others will simply have an appreciation for that thing. Not everything has to have an explanation for it to bring pleasure or satisfaction to others. Nor does it need to be understood by everyone to have value to some. Sometimes it just is and exists above the criticism of those who can't appreciate it.

BigEdMustaphaNot at all. But you'd be surprised how many appear here in the forums asking just to troll and criticize. Didn't mean to imply you were doing so. It was more a general answer to the many who poke fun at we top collectors. :-)

glennacNo problem. I was just curious. I did end up picking one of these sets up for my work desk because it seemed like a neat item to play with as well as a good conversation piece.
