Actual question for the watch experts: is there any reputable brand that makes dressy auto chronos at 40mm (or at least a lug to lug of <48mm) for $600 or less?

FarragoI'm no expert, but the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono and the Hamilton Linwood are both 38mm. Not sure if they're what you would consider dressy, but Google them and see.

FarragoThe best way to learn about watches and what you like is to look at lots of them. It's your money, you are going to wear it...... That said, I would go to eBay, Amazon, JomaShop, Ashford, Chrono24, etc., and do a search on "mens automatic chronograph watch". I would then sort the results by price, truncate the price at $600, and sort by high to low. See what you can get and---most important----see what you like. Make a quick list of promising watches and then research the brands. You will learn a lot about watches and a lot about your tastes this way--whatever "dressy auto chronos" means for you. Other thoughts: 1) do you really need a chronograph to tell elapsed time, or is this a choice for fashion/looks nice to you? If you need a really accurate elapsed timer, I'd buy a very cheap Casio G-Shock--they are beaters and it's much easier to tell time using their digital readout; 2) If you really don't need the chronograph function, your search then becomes "dressy automatic 2 (hour minutes) or 3(hour minutes seconds) watch (with perhaps date or day). At this price point, the absence of the chronograph function gives you a lot more leverage in your $600 budget--you get a nicer watch when you don't have to spread the money across the chronograph functions. Brands that come to mind in this budget range are: Tissot, Edox, Mido, Seiko, Citizen, Bulova, Hamilton, Longines....I have heard of "fake" watches in this range---you have to be careful where you buy.
The entire point of this is--once you start this way, you are your own "expert", and for me, that journey has been lots of fun. I have been collecting watches for years, and learn something new each day. I wish you the best of luck. :)

FarragoI'm not an expert just an enthusiast. Some brands that come to mind in this price range to look into are Oris, Revue Thommen, Maurice Lacroix, Tissot, Hamilton just off the top of my head. Happy hunting. Sometimes the search is half the fun of watch collecting.
