Does anybody know if these are waterproof, or is the 3M protection more to keep the roughout leather in good condition? I would be very tempted if these are designed to keep my feet dry in a downpour or in slushy snow.

SwaamiHi Swaami~ These are treated with 3M Defender and it's very water resistant. We'll be relaunching this product soon and will post a video link to the water repellency on these. It's out of this world, and it's for more than just water --- oil and other abrasives will bounce off like it's nothing.

SwaamiNo, not waterproof. As delivered - I got mine from Thorogood - they have the ability to shed some water only. Bottom line with boots like these is that they will get dirty. I only wear when I know I'm not going to be likely to get them messed up, but also, consider that if you're a denim-head like me, you will get transfer. I have Iron Ranger Muleskinners that I love that look on, but these I'm trying to keep clean. Even if you add more 3M or whatever, they will get dirty in time. They are awesome boots, BTW!

TomasVI would not call them waterproof because you can spill water over them. I own them and 7 other paris of Thorogood as they are the best boots I own. And the last/welt will hold up to all sorts of weather fine. I climbed mountains in UK/Ireland wearing my Portage roofers and feet were dry (in the rain). But over time immersed in water, that 3M stuff will allow water into the rough out leather. Water resistant? Yes.

slb1961Thanks for the feedback and noted. You're correct -- It's virtually impossible these days to make waterproof claims; in fact many manufacturers these days avoid the wording not to get in trouble. I'll change my post above to say water resistant instead of waterproof as that's actually the case. My apologies. They are indeed great boots and the 3M treatment adds quite a bit on top of the already rugged quality of these.

TomasVI wanted to be helpful, not a pedantic twat that are often found online. As a guy who does spend lots of time in the outdoors doing such things, I wanted to let guys know that while the storm welt on the Thorogood hold up to anything, "waterproof" is a dream, and even boots I have made for that purpose are still prone to some leakage. I'm not in ANY way related to Thorogood/Weinbrenner. Just a huge fan of the product, company, and family. I've never ever had anyone not love the boots I've recommended. I firmly believe in them.

slb1961I gathered that much from being able to speak from a place of experience and knowledge since you actually own the product, and we highly appreciate helpful feedback from rational people like you, slb1961. We truly believe the same regarding Thorogood, they're a highly slept-on US bootmaker that has some great lasts/silhouettes and manufacturing that easily rivals other much more hyped brands without breaking the wallet.
