How would this leather feel vs the Normal Thorogood boot leather?

naterwThis is made with Chromexcel leather from the Horween tanner in the outskirts of Chicago, Illinois. It's a way higher quality than the leather used in the regular line from Thorogood (the non-1892 line that most people are familiar with).

TomasVMy question is how would it feel. Softer, or more durable, supple? I understand where it is made geographically and that it is stated to be a higher quality. I would like to know what properties make it a higher quality?

naterwFrom Thorogood: The leather used in the Mondovi is Horween Chromexcel [ CXL ]. It is a very specific leather, from a particular part of the cow. A process taking about 3 to 4 months.
The normal Thorogood brand, is made of “tumbled” leather and is much softer so that it forms to the foot fast as provides great comfort instantly, where the CXL leather will take some time to break in.This type of tanning “tumbled” is created with the use of small pebbles that gently abrade the material, giving a very soft texture to the product. It is desired not only for the texture, but also for the look on the finish. The most popular types of work boots foot for both men and women, are tumbled black or brown.

blouieSounds like more of a redwing type leather. I know my thorogood boots take 1/10 the time to break in as opposed to my red wings.

TomasVThe funny thing is Horween is not in the outskirts, it's located right in the middle of the north side. It's basically across from a Best Buy and is within walking distance of any number of yuppie stores, bars, and restaurants. It's a very unexpected location for a tannery.

naterwHorween Chromexcel leather is a smooth, oiled top of the line product. It is stuffed with different oils and waxes, and has a nice easy/smooth medium shiny sheen. It is made with both Cowhide OR, horsehide. I will assume this is cowhide, as Thorogood would say otherwise. You will have to break them in (which is getting the sole to bend with your upper). This will take a while. As Richard Martens of Weinbrenner (the parent company) says, "you earn the right to wear the 1892 collection." My recommendation to keep them in top shape is Sahphir boot cream, as it has neatsfoot oil as one of the ingredients, which is also one of the ingredients that this leather is stuffed with. This also allows you to keep a shine on them. See attachment of my Thorogood 1892 Portage with Holiday Blue shoe laces. I just buffed the pair with Saphir. Go for it! Oh, the regular oil tanned leather thorogood boots are softer, especially the tobacco colored oil tanned leather on their 814-4200 model, their most popular model. For those, I use Montana Pine Pitch blend to keep the oils in.
