Well I have heard many say “made in China?” but Begg knives didn't go to china, they went to Reate knives. It took over 2 months of daily conversations on engineering to be able to accomplish this knife and achieve this level of machining and finish. This knife has to be taken on and off the mill several times to achieve this final polished trim and the machined pockets for weight reduction. If you get it wrong at that point the knife is scrap.   So this requires meticulous engineering and precision knife making.  We would not have another company make our knives unless we were convinced that the tuning, fit and finish is on a level of what we would expect from our own shop in Petaluma, California.  We believe Reate is producing some of the highest quality knife manufacturing for a knife in this price point and level.  I am 47 years old and remember people saying 30 years ago "its made in Japan!! thats garbage!" well what is the general opinion of Japanese products now?  Very high!  We buy iPhones, Nikes, Flat screen televisions, ect and the list goes on and on but I find it funny I never hear anyone complaining about their iPhone and any other great product like it made in China. As a matter of fact most people commenting are more than likely commenting from a phone or a computer made in China.  There has been lots of products that have come from China that are more than underwhelming to say the least but thats the great part of a free market, you can choose what you like.  If we made these knives here in California they would be at least $1000 and in much more limited quantity than the SteelCraft series.   There will be many Youtube reviews on this knife coming soon from our customers and considering most of them have pre sold, I anticipate the secondary market will be a lot more than what they are retailing for due to availability.  We can only deliver small amounts of them per month because Reate is a company that is very small like ours, and because of this we have already moved on to the mini Bodega and stopped taking orders for the Kwaiken.  In the future we hope to offer models simultaneously, but at the moment Reate is not in a position to do this, which means all of these models will be made in limited numbers.  If you are lucky enough to get one you will be telling yourself, I'm glad I didn't miss out.  When we started Begg knives shop in California 4 years ago it was a miracle to be able to even get one of Todds knives made by a crew he trained.  This was the first time anyone who wanted one of Todd's knives could actually see it as a possibility to get a knife in their hands considering his 6 year wait for his customs.  This was no small undertaking and it took us years of making knives as a small group to achieve this level of knife making and engineering to come close to what Todd does as a custom knife maker. These Kwaikens aren't just some random knives; these are part of a knife making legacy.  This knife won "Best Tactical Folder" at the 2014 Knife Makers guild which was Todds evaluation piece to enter the Knife Makers Guild as a probationary member.  This is the first time the guild, after 45 years in its history, invited a knife maker who uses a CNC to become a member.  This knife is a symbol for a new era in knife making and Todds life long journey for excellence and achievement.  When you buy a Kwaiken you get a piece of this history.  FYI, 100 years from now your iPhone won't be here but this knife will probably in the hands of one of your heirs, just sayin! Best, Mark

Begg KnivesActually, for the money, I'll just purchase a Chris Reeve knife, which is a better knife in every respect for pretty much every reason you list here. CRK has won once or twice at Blade themselves, heh. I definitely won't ever think "Oh maaaan, I'm so unlucky! I didn't get this machine made knife from China made with a Todd Begg design that he didn't so much as even be on the same continent with before it was sold to me on the internet!" LOL
Also, I'm sorry, but I just don't believe that Reate was the only one you could find who makes knives to that spec. I think we all know that's not true. Plenty of companies here in America could produce this knife to your specs no problem, so you should probably have worded your bloviating about Reate a little better.

KnifeGuyYou realize CRK uses CNCs to make his scales? The knives come dull right out of the shop. lol The fact CRK can't get a proper heat treatment on their blades is reason enough to not buy one.(he's obviously going cheap on more than just the heat treatment)
You obviously have never owned one.
