astr0b0yI think Schiit sells most of their stuff based on marketing and a really nice website.
Like their measurements or not, their presentation is sublime and really makes you want to reach for your wallet. I think that more than anything sells their products.
I'm tempted to get this... I just wish they didn't keep using the TPA6120A2 and its awful output impedance. Might be good to buy as a stand-alone DAC though.

astr0b0yI haven't personally heard a Schiit DAC for a long time (haven't had the opportunity) but it would be fairer to qualify that that is a Bifrost Multibit with a 16-bit R2R AD5547 and not an audio chip. More conventional chips like the delta sigma AK4490 are used in their non-NOS DACs and probably measure better.

npc2I wouldnt doubt that they measure better, the multibit measurements are horrid. I will say the dual ak4490 for the jotunheim, hasnt impressed anyone whos heard it. but again thats a built in all in one. I was kinda sad reading that though, as i'm going for a fully balanced setup (already bought a cable and the hd650 cans, no turning back at the price points) and the price for a fully balanced dac and amp is expensive. The only true options for something 500mw or higher at 300 ohms is this or the jotunheim. The dual ak4490s lack soundstage, which is a huge - in my book. I tend to game alot, and really need a deep soundstage. I'm halfway leaning more towards this dx7s now, as it has some of the best measurements, and the detail is so accurate from the reviews around.
The amp is powerful in this at 546 mw at 300 ohm, and at that impedance it wont affect my cans. the hd650s max power is 500mw, so this is right on point as well, and the input/output options are fantastic. I highly doubt i'd notice much difference at this price point other than have more POTS adjustment on the jotunheim i couldnt use. Lets not forget saving 120 bucks.

DarknessAngelThat's why I only said measure better... Sound better depends a lot on implementation for DACs from what I have read. e.g. the Jot has the DACs on a small expansion card versus the Bifrost or Modi2 which have them on separate boards and it seems that Schiit keeps releasing new USB interface implementations for their modular devices to presumably reduce jitter and noise (through isolation schemes). The single AK4490 in my m9XX sounds pretty good and the measurements I have seen do look fine.
As for the HD650, it is pretty flexible with sources from what I have tried and I have never had issues with getting enough volume for it - though of course I would agree that it does scale as people claim though I am not sure that is more cost effective than just different headphones. I am not sure that soundstage would vary that much with more power or balanced compared to just different drivers like the HD800 or maybe even just different pads - the HD650 doesn't exactly have a large stage though it has a nice presentation. Of course if I did get a Jot or DX7s like this one I would build a balanced cable just to try it.

Honestly I've had the DX7 basically since day one and I love it. Listen to it every day and actually don't want anything else unless its a better DX7! I'm waiting on the measurements from the DX7S to see if its a worthy upgrade to my already-awesome DX7!

npc2I gotcha. What sucks is nowhere near me is there anywhere to sample any of this equipment. So spec, measurements and people's personal opinion is all we have to go upon.
If I remember right someone said for every few hundred bucks performance may scale 5ish percent. I wouldn't doubt that one bit. In honesty with any cans I wouldn't spend much more on the amp/dac than the headphones are worth. Without spending thousands on headphones it's probably not worth buying Dacs or amps in that price range.

SythrixThe high output impedance is the only reason I'm hesitating. It'll be find with some of my cans (HD 6XX, HE 400) but less than ideal with any IEM or ATH-MSR7.

amirmOh how I wish your review would come out before the end of the drop... I don't have any real reason to believe it will be bad or something... but then sometimes weird things happen between revisions.

amirmBeing they sent you one I can only assume it'll be as good or better than the dx7. If their measurements are as good as the new specs it'll be a win. I already went in on this and hoping for the best. I'm counting on if anything they implemented the internals just as good or better than the original
