Some things to point out so far: - Came set to 230V, but with a US power cord. Huh? - The coax out only works from the USB input, not from any other input. - It has three modes, HP, HP + DAC, and DAC. In HP mode, the rear outputs are silent, in DAC mode they are line outs, while in HP + DAC mode, the rear outputs are volume controlled (i.e. it functions as a preamp). I wish they had an HP + PRE mode for that, and an actual HP + DAC mode where the rear outputs are line outs, while the headphone outs are volume controlled. That would make it easier to only judge the amp section of it because you can adjust the headphone's volume without affecting the other amp's volume.

DontDooDadis it particularly difficult to switch between the three modes? I was in a habit with my SMSL M6 DAC to just flick a switch to change between headphones and line out.

muggyYou have to double click the volume button to cycle through them. So if you only switch between two of them, you have to skip one half the time. And the button requires some pressure to press, so you might mess up and only press it once, changing the source. Then you have to press it once three more times to get back to the source you were on. The UI is really clunky. To get into the setup menu, you have to turn it off with the switch in the back of the unit, then hold the button, then turn it on, and let go of the button when the menu appears. At that point, it will register your letting go of the button as a click, changing the filter to the next filter in sequence. Ridiculous.

DontDooDadSigh. Well hopefully it won't be something we're constantly adjusting. How's the unit sounding so far?

muggyIt was unpleasant the first few hours, but I can't say that continued. I left it on since, so it could theoretically be burn in, or just that it sounds better warm. I'll turn it off tonight, let's see how it sounds tomorrow. It's not as good as the Yggdrasil, at least in terms of sound stage (in my head rather than in front), realism (at least cymbals) and bass impact. I still need to compare it to other delta sigma DACs, it doesn't strike me as worse than them except for the first day.

DontDooDadFun fact: the coax out even works when the DX7s is turned off via the switch on the back. Even up to 24/192, without issues. The iFi micro iDSD technically behaves similarly (USB audio > coax out, despite being turned off), but it messes up the audio for the highest sample rates unless turned on.

DontDooDadI brought it directly from Topping. Frankly, unless you need to keep changing the settings, I don't think it is worth it to buy it.

PawPawDogHow? I don't see it listed on http://en.tpdz.net/products_list/pmcId=24.html Here it also sounds like it's not ready yet: https://audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-topping-dx7s-dac-and-headphone-amp.2378/post-82401 Or was that some time ago? I am still somewhat considering this as a DAC/preamp in my speaker system, precisely because it supports a remote. Would be cool if Massdrop sold it, too :)

DontDooDadI brought it from their taobao store. I missed the first drop in April and did not want to wait for the second drop so I went to their taobao stroe. They had a backlong back in April plus the remote was not ready, but I figured if they can ship it by end of May, I will still get it faster than waiting for the second drop. It is actually a bit more expensive buying direct than the drop here, but I didn't want to wait. The remote I got while look impressive as the case wade from CNC solid aluminum block, the buttons did not feel top notch, and I don't think it was the redesigned one as it does not look any different from one for the older DX7. While it is not really needed if one uses it as desktop unit, I do think Massdrop should offer it as option for future drops. The cost of remote was about US$15 addition, if brought along with the DX7s.

DontDooDadAnother nice thing about this is that I can turn the DX7s off, change the settings when I turned it back on, save, and the music just keeps playing because the audio device never went away as far as the connected computer is concerned.

PawPawDogI can't really use Taobao for language reasons, but I managed to use my Logitech Harmony Hub and the corresponding Android app to change the DX7's volume (incl. mute), change the inputs, change the filter setting (very welcome!), display brightness and auto on/off. I also have icons for the DAC/HP/HP+DAC modes, but having my power amp connected, I don't feel like trying that right now ^^ This is pretty cool.

DontDooDadWhen change modes on the fly, the DX7s will mute first, change mode and then bring up the volume to previous setting for HP/HP+DAC and 0db for DAC mode. No loud pops while changing modes.

DontDooDadAnother fun fact: since the USB > coax conversion is completely independent, you can connect the coax out to the coax in, and listen to the coax input instead. :-D Not sure this is useful at all, unless of course you have something like Schiit's gadget, which in its prototype form has a coax in, changes the pitch of the digital audio, and sends it out again through its coax out...
