I want this knife, but I have absolutely no practical use for it.

namhodSame.
This looks like a great quality knife (I have two Tops BOB survival knives, and they are great), but I can't think of a situation where I couldn't as easily bring a larger fixed blade knife (for outdoor use), or a more compact folder (for EDC or urban use) with me instead.
I suppose it would be great for certain types of climbing, where weight might be an important factor. But for the short recreational route climbing and bouldering I do, there's no advantage in choosing such a small fixed blade knife.
That's why I've never actually taken my Esee Izula II or Esee 3 out into the field. They're both fantastic knives, but I've always felt more secure bringing a larger blade with no penalty.
Outside of those small circumstances where very light weight or small fixed blade size is an important issue, choosing a knife like this seems more an exercise in variety than anything.
Still, it seems like a great knife, and I'm glad Massdrop is offering it.

K.T.NI carry my Izula 2 on my belt under my shirt in situations where I don't want people to know I have a knife with me. So I guess the mini scandi could fill that role as well.

namhodGood use for it.
Wouldn't a pocket folder be more practical and comfortable for such a use?
It's a matter of choice, because the Izula II is also great for that kind of carry.
But I personally find carrying a folder in public less awkward than even a small fixed blade that extends above the belt line.

K.T.NThe Izula 2 is basically invisible unless you are wearing a tight shirt. I typically carry it when it's unlikely I will need a knife, yet still want to have one with me. The outline of a folder in your pocket is obvious to more and more people these days.
I mostly carry folders, sometimes I just want a fixed blade. Ya know? No scientific or logical reason.

Yeah, there's no one way that is right for everyone, and a lot of it comes down to personal preference, too.
For me, I do a lot of handyman type work, so a decent folder with a 3.5" blade fits the bill.
I live in a major city, so a bigger fixed blade knife on my belt that would be perfectly suited to what I need, like a Mora utility knife, would get me stopped by the many police patrol officers who I cross paths with just about every day. So a discreet low-rider folder is what's called for in my situation.
I like a bigger blade, 3.5" or so, over a smaller one as the bigger handle gives me more leverage for cutting than a smaller knife, and the extra blade length is more efficient when drawing out a cut on bulky material.
Yes, I agree that the even bigger knives are more suited to outdoor type situations.
Luckily, we have a lot of choices for whatever needs we each have.

K.T.NAgreed. And I meant no disrespect--just pointing out that it is funny how people do prefer different things for different reasons. Even with your point on the blade length--I totally understand where you are coming from with having a larger blade and more leverage, but I also feel more comfortable and like I have more control with a smaller blade (and that may have to do with a lack of experience with a knife). But I also think that you are probably doings tasks that I rarely, if ever do. And that if I had to do a lot of cutting I may get to the point where I prefer a bigger blade as well.

JeremyHeldDifferent strokes for different folks.
Personal preference is huge in the knife world. Something I love may be despised by everyone around me.
The way I look at it, if it is comfortable and does the jobs I want it to then I may like it. Blade steel aside, those are the big two for me. Looks coming in fourth place of course.
This knife I really do like, but I can't find a "need" for it. I have handled one and it feels great, has one of my favorite steels, looks great too!
