Nice-looking, apparently robust knife and seems like a decent price at $92.74 including US postage; you can preorder on SMKW with a 10% off coupon that totals $92.48. I wonder whether the complaints I've heard about their fixed-blades (TOPS BOB) apply here as well? Those being: 1. Not a true Scandi? 2. Not a flat 90º grind on the spine? Not crazy about the clip, doesn't seem quite like a match for the overall aesthetic. Also, NB, unlike with most MD knife drops that fail to state the country of origin, this knife appears to be made in Italy (Maserin), not China.

sudevaThe description on the TOPS site definitely says it's a full scandi.... But pretty sure I'm seeing a beveled edge here?

And regarding the 90° spine, check the video I posted in the Windrunner drop, they discuss why none of their knives have it.
Essentially is because of the differential heat treat, the spines aren't hardened enough for what you would want a 90° spine for. Though no idea if that applies here, since they aren't making the blades

sudevathey sharpen the edge as a scandi convex grind. its good for what it does. I believe that Real Steel makes true scandi folders.
and Kavik is correct, the use a differential heat treat to increase their knives resilience for camp chores like chopping and batonning. TOPS is a pretty good company that are expensive but they know their stuff.
fun engineering fact, rounded edges, such as a spine, are twice as strong as 90 degree edges. this is true with most things, not just knives.

Illinois_knife_guyThanks to both! I think the problem with the BOB is that the spine is meant for a fire steel, otherwise I’m not questioning the design. The mismatch on that particular model made me wonder about QC and design issues generally.

sudeva@illinois_knife_guy excellent point about the strength benefits of rounded
Sudeva, i don't own a BOB, but my understanding from looking at their site is that the stainless 154CM version is fully hardened, so a flattened spine could work as a striker But i thought on the 1095 version your supposed to strike with the metal hanging out at the pommel?
But seriously, go over to the TOPS Windrunner drop and check out both videos I posted there. There's a great shop for video that shows how they do what they do, and an interview video that talks about a few things, and the differential heat treat and non square spines are both brought up 👍
