The Amazon product reviews for this rig are overwhelmingly positive... Tempting :)

KaftanI have had a couple and the Traxxas is a nice truck and absolutely nothing wrong with it. If you plan on actually entering races though I would go with the Team Associated. If you are not going to race it and just want a truck to jump stuff then nothing wrong with the Slash, but it will break. It'll probably break often too. Its a good truck to get into the hobby with.

KaftanIt's also $10 cheaper than the lowest price on Amazon including free shipping with Prime.

reubadoobExcept, it's $40 cheaper than Amazon and Tower Hobbies, even at the highest drop price. The key to this setup is: VXL. 4X4, and RTR.
The closest VXL 4X4 to this price is the Platinum, which is not RTR.

TurkishfriedWhy is the Team Associated better? Is it more reliable, breaks less often or has cheaper replacement parts?

Mario.PaulThe Team Associated trucks isn't "Better" in general. It is a better racer compared to the Slash. THe Slash is more of a basher class. People race with slashes in the amateur league because its fun, lots of contact, and they are durable. The Team Associated SC trucks are not exactly weak... But they are better racers, more balanced, and lighter depending on models you compare. They are better if you plan to race seriously. Honestly both are good models, I'd rather go with the slash if you don't have a race track near by.

ShervThanks for the reply Sherv. I kinda understood it like that, but it his/her message didn't make sense to me since he then mentioned that the Slash will break often. So it's a good basher but it breaks often? It didn't make sense to me. Anyway, I'm still probably getting this one, I have no interest in RC racing and if it does break, Traxxas parts should be easy to obtain if what I've read is right.

Mario.PaulTraxxas is by and large more durable than team associated. Never the less you WILL break either car. I broke mine in the first 10 minutes of running it. Crashes are hard on anything. But traxxas is easier to get parts for. I would do a quick search and find a local hobby shop to source parts from, repairs only take a few minutes and you wont want to wait days for shipping. Also look into upgrade parts, good rule of thumb is if you broke it, you will break it again. RPM Racing is my favorite go-to brand and make stronger parts and they back them with life time warranties if they do break. Parts i would suggest from day one for this truck are A-arms and rear hub carriers. RPM makes both for only a couple bucks more than stock replacement parts and are really the only weak spots stock.

ItsASimpleFactThat makes sense now, great explanation. Thanks for the treasure trove of information! That's the kind of info I'd have to dig a few hours in as usual. For other newbies as well as myself, what tools would you recommend as must-haves for repair and maintenance?

ItsASimpleFactAgreed that these will break over time as you run into things, but in the first 10 minutes? Were you taking it off huge jumps into hard pavement first thing out of the box or something...?

MarkI managed to misjudge a turn and slam into a curb at 30+ mph... only had the thing out 5 minutes, so it's definitely not unheard of.

Abusive_WhaleI guess I'm overly cautious with the throttle straight out of the box :)

Mario.Paulall the screws are metric on it. Look at a hardware store or auto-parts store to see if they have a nice-ish set of drivers, need 1.5mm, 2mm and 2.5mm. i found a kit at pepboys for about $10 that has everything i need. it does come with a basic set of "L" wrenches to use but really are not user friendly. As i said in my last post, find a local hobby shop and get a decient charger, it comes with one but its really not worth keeping for the long run.

MarkI've worked in a hobby shop for over 3 years, about 75% of people break something first day. Its part of learning how to drive them. And for me it was sliding sideways into a basket ball hoop the first time.
