Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. That's a bummer about only offering the 207 model. Customization is pretty important for an investment like this. Symmetric modifiers are a big deal for me and it certainly sucks out the enthusiasm of getting exactly what you want out of a $200+ keyboard, even if it is a great price for the model.
I appreciate Massdrop reaching out about model options, but I'm surprised by Truly Ergonomic's response. I could understand if they are unloading a particular model and I might be willing to compromise on that consideration, but why try to use diversion tactics to say that I really want a different product than I am asking for? I don't think I've ever heard a story where TE went out of their way to give people what they want. It's always about how great they are and how you are just doing it wrong or you are stupid if you have an issue with what they are offering. Seriously, read over their FAQ page with this in mind. On some questions they go out of their way to say that alternative features or designs are stupid and they even have a section where they air out their dirty laundry with the Better Business Bureau. I'm coming around to Rambonobo and the rest of geekhack's opinions about TE. At best they are clueless about their customers and at worst they are belligerent. Someone send a few copies of "How to Win Friends and Influence People" over to their office so that people can like their product and their company.
I will be holding out until I finish my own keyboard designs for portable and main driver keyboards. I'll pull the trigger on buying a CMStorm Quick Fire Rapid with Cherry browns on Amazon for $65 which will be my portable board until I need to harvest it for switches and keys.
