I believe they're Japanese "designed"... made in China. That's been happening heavily the last few years, following the same route as the US. Designed here, outsourced for manufacturing there. Sometimes a Chinese firm will set up shop in Japan just to say "designed" there.

So, is it German carbon steel or 440 Japanese steel? The sub header said German but the first paragraph says it's Japanese.
... Or are these knives, somehow, biracial?

Max_HardfingerThis series is 440 Japanese steel. Their other lines that can be found on Amazon are made of German steel.

I bought a chefs, paring and offset bread Tuo Cutlery Japanese steel knives from the B&W line and very impressed considering how little I paid. Nicely balanced and very easy to maintain sharpness (when compared to my Henckels) . My only complaint are the hairline cracks that developed in the plastic handles, but hey I throw them in the dishwasher. (Don't do that with expensive knives).
This is a really nice set, but I'd probably avoid their German steel knives based on others comments.

Haha I get it now! It can be quite misleading to those who don't know better XD
phoenixsongYeah, I'm fairly confident the name Pakkawood was chosen specifically to be misleading. It's a solid choice for a knife handle though.

"African Pakkawood", are we somehow implying the handles are made from a "Pakka Tree" found in Africa ?
Thanks

this actually looks like a nice set, and finally one with the actual knives that one might need (maybe even one or two more than necessary).
Amazon reviews look really positive too...

Thank you very much. I've been seriously considering that apogee knife here on massdrop. I think that might be the way I go. it looks pretty great, has decent reviews and the price is right.
Thanks for all your time!
JamalStevensOf course! you should be rather happy with it. It's a good knife with (as far as I can tell) good steel. Just beware electric sharpeners that aren't water cooled, as the steel is sensitive to higher temperatures that could happen during aggressive sharpening. It should probably be kept at ~16 degrees per side.
