What does it mean to "seal a tarp"? I thought these tarps already have a waterproof repellent applied, no?
I'm thinking of getting something like this to go above our ultralight 3-person tent (that we use for two people). The rainfly just makes it too stuffy. So I figured I'd ditch the rainfly and just use a larger tarp, that way I get the rain protection with a ton more airflow. That should work, right?

CommentatusMaximusThey are referring to seam sealing. Sometimes the seams leak a bit through the sewing holes. As for this instead of a rain fly, that would totally work as long as you setup between trees where you can hang the tarp.

CommentatusMaximusyes. that is exactly what i do. with a lot of backpacking tents, everything is really light except the fly. so i ditch the OEM fly and get a light tarp. only use the tarp if it rains. or... a groundcloth (tyvek) + a bug bivy +- tarp if it rains. BTW i always also use an inflatable sleeping pad which is insulated (it always gets cold at night where i backpack).
