The brainchild of long-distance hiker Brian Frankle, ULA Equipment was founded in 2001 with the goal of providing lightweight, durable gear to a growing community of ultralight hikers. By 2009, fans like Chris and Sally McMaster found themselves on a four-month waiting list for Frankles’s homemade products. That’s when Frankles sold his business—to none other than the McMasters. Today, ULA gear is still produced in limited runs in the Utah headquarters, and available through select dealers around the world. Every pack is PCT ready and ensured for a lifetime.
From ULA: "The J straps are the traditional straps, and work best on most men with average builds. Most men with athletic builds, i.e. strong, square shoulders will find the S straps work better, and also big guys with big shoulders. Swimmers, climbers, weight lifters, triathletes, XC skiers, etc usually prefer the S straps. Almost 100% of women prefer the S straps , call Chris 435-753 5191 if you have a question about strap choice."
At only 3 oz (85 g), ULA's Rain Cover is a nice add-on for our friends who hike regardless of weather. It fits ULA's packs perfectly and packs down small so it can easily be carried in a hipbelt pocket with room to spare. Color may vary from the photos above as ULA uses whatever fabric they have in stock, from a variety of colors: Silver, Black, Purple, Royal, Red, Green. It is not possible to accommodate your choice of color, though when possible ULA will try to match it to your pack color.
