Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. But I guess the pictures hinted that the quality of the plastic is not really up to other professionally made mechanical keyboards like KBC, Corsair or CMStorm. And then, of course, the price also indicates that this is not premium product.
The typing on the other hand feels GREAT! This is the most reliable typing experience I have had to date with very few typos, taking into consideration a lot of other mechanical keyboards.
Still, I do not really want to use it. My fingers hurt after typing on it for half a day almost constantly, and reading others having the same problem, I'd guess it has to do something with the materials used to manufacture this keyboard. Seems to be some kind of softener or chemical substance in the plastic. Also after extended typing the smell is getting more and more noticeable and the smell also tends to stick to the fingers after using it.
The typing feel is awesome, but using it over and extended period of time just feels unhealthy. I will not continue using it as keyboard, but just put it on a shelf treating it like a show piece. Therefor I can not recommend buying this keyboard.
I highly doubt that chemicals in the keyboard are leaching into your fingers and poisoning you.
The good thing is at least you've given some money towards the ONLY company manufacturing keyboards on your home soil.
Unicomp will just sit there and give you the look of WWWHHHAAAATTTTTT ; )
