The Utica Cutlery Survival Series machete is a tank when it comes to clearing brush, making kindling, chopping wood, and slashing weeds. The blade clocks in at 11.4 inches long and nearly a fifth of an inch thick, giving it some serious heft Read More
Please ignore any negative comments that I made about Utica. I was thinking of a knife that I purchased from United. I edited my previous comment, but I do not see the addendum.
I believe that this is overpriced for what it is. 1095 is very inexpensive steel. The recommended HRc for this steel is 58. At the lower numbers here, it will be as tough as nails, but have little edge holding ability. I personally don't know anything about Utica's HT. Being that I see a lot of inexpensive knives bearing their name, I have my suspicions that it may not be the best. I would looks at Condor, Becker, Cold Steel, and a few other brands if I were to spend this much. I am not arguing about this being a great knife, just as to whether of not it is a great machete.
14themoneyHello, thanks for your post. Utica is America's oldest same site cutlery manufacturer! Same address since 1910! Our line of UTK Survival Knives have been well received and offer a lifetime warranty. Utica also has some licensing deals with other brands such as Realtree and Crush...these are the lower end imported items.
mmathewsI edited my comment by appending a paragraph on top saying that I had mistakenly thot that my crummy United boot knife was a Utica. My Bad. I don't see the edit, so I will try again. Thank you for your post.
Don't own any Utica blades but seen some favorable reviews. This looks nice, but it's almost identical to the Condor Pack Golok, which I already own. Otherwise I might be tempted to buy it. But that coating looks like it may cause some drag.
megalonzergI am not familiar with this particular sheath. The sheathed machetes et al. that I have, have sheaths that are open on one side and are held together with snaps, velcro, or other type of fastener. The one picture of the sheath that is shown here supports that type of construction. Sorry that I don't have any more concrete info.
megalonzergIf it's anything like my Condor Pack Golok (which comes with a nice leather sheath), the back side of the sheath isn't sewn all the way up to the top, so the opening is wide enough to accommodate the end of the blade. It's difficult to tell from the photo of the Utica sheath, and I dont have any first hand experience with it. But I assume it must be constructed like this Condor.
