I believe that this is overpriced for what it is. 1095 is very inexpensive steel. The recommended HRc for this steel is 58. At the lower numbers here, it will be as tough as nails, but have little edge holding ability. I personally don't know anything about Utica's HT. Being that I see a lot of inexpensive knives bearing their name, I have my suspicions that it may not be the best. I would looks at Condor, Becker, Cold Steel, and a few other brands if I were to spend this much. I am not arguing about this being a great knife, just as to whether of not it is a great machete.

14themoneyI own a Condor Pack Golok (and some of other Condor machetes), which this seems to be patterned after... and they're actually 1075 steel. I'm no metallurgist, but I think the idea is that the softer steel resists breaking better. The harder the knife, the thicker it needs to be to resist breaking under heavy use... and these are heavy choppers.

GamalielI am in the infancy of my metallurgy, too. My understanding that in MOST steels, hardness ( HRc) and toughness (doesn't break or chip) live at the opposite ends of a spectrum. My point was that if I were buying a chopping tool in 1095, I would want it around 58. If I were to be clearing vines off the side of the Alamo, then I would seriously consider something with these specs, altho I doubt that I would pick up a Utica. (I reserve the right to change my mind, however.) With the 1075, one could probably sharpen it on the rock that was hit and dulled the blade.
14themoneyHello, thanks for your post. Utica is America's oldest same site cutlery manufacturer! Same address since 1910! Our line of UTK Survival Knives have been well received and offer a lifetime warranty. Utica also has some licensing deals with other brands such as Realtree and Crush...these are the lower end imported items.

mmathewsI edited my comment by appending a paragraph on top saying that I had mistakenly thot that my crummy United boot knife was a Utica. My Bad. I don't see the edit, so I will try again. Thank you for your post.
