This is listed as a Black Friday special, but it is no cheaper than when I joined the drop. :-)

After diligently searching, I could find nothing negative about these knives, just the sheaths. The UTKB-6 is about $10 cheaper here than anywhere else I could find it. Count me in, even tho I am not sure that the sheath is really Kydex. There is disagreement about what the sheath is made from on various website. If I find it necessary to shake that thing at somebody, it won't be the sheath.

14themoneyIt’s a hard plastic molded sheath I’ve had one for a year. It does rattle but it is sturdy.

They have to do the coating because they used 1095 high carbon (highly oxidative) steel. That steel will rust. A lot. 1095 is a very inexpensive steel. You’d have to coat it in oil and constantly maintain it without that coating. It may or may not prevent the spine from sparking the ferro rod. I don’t know.

MassdropologistI have D2 and 1095 steel knives and once they have a decent patina, rust and corrosion are not as bad as people make it sound. Anyone that obsesses over knives (like anyone reading this post!) is certainly wiling and able to apply a bit of oil to a knife after it is cleaned (heck I've even used animal fat in the field). No, you can't throw them in your saltwater tackle box and expect them to survive, but for EDC, camping, or hunting, I actually prefer these kinds of steels to the fancy stainless ones like VG-10 , S35VN, or S30V - I can get a consistently hair-popping edge on "tool steel" blades but often struggle to get crazy sharp edges on expensive "super steels" without a LOT of tinkering and fiddling. And I have a lot of different sharpening tools, both hand-operated and motorized.

bpchristensenYeah. Totally valid points. It is a “tough” steel that makes it a good performer in the applications you mentioned. I have a few knives in 1095.

I don't understand why they would include a ferro rod and not flat grind the spine of the knife.. And what is that weird pebbly coating on the steel? I prefer my steel naked (especially HC)...

bpchristensenThe rod comes with a striker would be the only reason I can guess. I’d rather have a clean spot on the spine though.

bpchristensen1095 steel has a tendency to rust unless coated. Holds a decent edge though. So, the coating is to keep rust down. Keep your edge sharp and oil it every once in a while and it will be fine. Those reasons are why they are including the striker for the fire starter.

Gideon’s Tactical YouTube review. https://youtu.be/JI9SDDzVYb0 Good comparison between the three blade sizes and general features. No comments about fit & finish, but other reading suggests that it will be similar to something like a Case.

Anyone have any experience with these knives?

The smaller 3 knives all look basically the same, but the largest model changes the blade shape to a bowie styled clip point and the sharpener on the sheath moves to the top of the sheath.
