I have owned one of these stoves for years and use it for 3 season backpacking. I use a bottle cap with a small amount of fuel to prime it, and a windscreen made of tinfoil and a paperclip. Everything packs nicely into the MSR Ti kettle that I use aswell. (Full disclosure, I am the sort that trims pack straps and removes patches.)
Filling can be tricky (biggest complaint), but it heats well enough for freezer bag cooking. It's a great, durable alcohol stove if you're looking to try out using them. I forget how much I paid for mine, but it was a factory second for a similar price through BPL.
If you have the extra cash and do not want to DYI your first alcohol stove, buy it. Side benefit to the Vargo is you can invert it and use fuel tabs.
