My "BestInTheVerse" cable finally arrived, and I said I would try to post impressions here.
For those who are unfamiliar, BestInTheVerse does custom aftermarket headphone cables, and they get universally positive reviews on the various web forums. They are handmade, by what appears to be a one person operation. He periodically stops taking orders when his backlog becomes large enough. It took around 4 months for my cable to arrive, so you need to be patient if you order from him.
I didn't buy the cable for an increase in sound quality. My instinct has always been that any difference in sound quality would be subtle at best. I haven't listened extensively to the new cable, and I haven't A/B'd it with the original, but my impression remains the same. The new cable certainly sounds good, no worse than the stock cable, but if it's better, the difference is small. Certainly smaller than rolling a different tube into my amp (Vali 2). At this point I'm willing to chalk up any perceived difference to placebo effect. I do have some friends who also have the HD 6XX, so I will try to do a comparison next time I get together with them. On the other hand, I think long term listening is actually a better indicator of sound quality.
So, if it wasn't for sound quality, why did I buy it, and is it worth it? If you look up my original post, it was primarily for comfort. I find the original cable slightly annoying at times, as the rubber coating tends to grab at by jaw and neck when I move. I think it succeeds in that respect. It is easy to position them away from my face and neck, and the paracord covering doesn't grab at my skin like the stock cable does.
It seems to be very well made. And it is very pretty to look at. The price was reasonable to me (<$100 for hand crafted - most aftermarket cables are a lot more expensive). So far I'm quite happy with it.
