Buckbrickis the Zen any good?
For the monk plus, will the audio improve with dac/amp? my centrace slim has yet to arrive.. the monks has great soundstage and treble but the mids and bass sound a tad muffled on my 6 plus and mbpr...
detroixI don't have the Zen. Yes, the Monks sounds better with an amp. You'll get better bass-mids response. I use an iPhone 6s and there's too much treble glare with one pair foam on, plugged directly to it and no EQ. I have a portable amp that has gain and bass boost and it sounds way better.
Do post your thoughts of the Monks with the Centrance. I'm very interested in the DAC Portable.
BuckbrickThe one I've gotten is CEntrance DACport Slim. The portable is the newer model with built-in battery and higher resolution support I reckon.
Anyway on a brand new day with the VE Monks and low gain settings, the music sounded richer at the lower ends. This is relative to just plugging right into the mbpr (and the sound card for mbpr is already competent). At higher volumes, there is no distortions from my testing; just don't use the high gain settings.
Overall, this $5 VE monk plus is easily worth $30-$40 when paired with a portable amp/dac. I think above that it's a stretch based on my experience with other iems and even bt headsets at that price range and beyond.
