Considering the mach 7. It would be my first automatic. Noob question: Right now I have a cheap quartz timex expedition. The ticking sound is so loud I can't even stand to have it on the table next to me when I sleep. Would this watch, or automatics in general make significantly less noise?

meowzzaI can't speak for this movement, but I have a Hamilton Khaki with an ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. I love the watch and find the mechanics fascinating, but it is much louder than my old quartz watch, and I can often hear it ticking away on my nightstand. I believe an automatic has more moving parts flinging about, so, depending on the case, there may be more noise.

meowzzacomparing timex quartz with swiss automatics, the ticking is softer with the automatic. I have to put the watch to my ear or have it close to my head to hear the ticking where as I can sometimes hear the timex from across the room.
The sound is also a different quality--the softer mechanical ticking is not annoying to me at all and I like the sound. It also ticks much more rapidly--like several times a second.

rmowensThanks, good to know. The Hamilton Khaki lines up with the aesthetic I'm looking for, just as this mach 7 does.

meowzzaGood luck. I do like the look of these Machs, but I can't get over the huge case sizes on everything these days. The 38mm of the Khaki is perfect for me. At 36mm, the Glycine Combat 6 is a nice watch with a similar look. For a first foray into automatics, any of the many flavors of Seiko 5 (SNKxxxx, SNZxxxx) are worth consideration.

meowzzaTimex quartz are notorious for being loud tickers, i have 3 all with different quartz movements and they're all pretty loud. You'll struggle to hear the ETA ticking unless right next to your ear :)

meowzzaTimex tend to be loud anyhow. I've got one hand wound Chinese movement that is LOUD, but the rest of my automatics I have to put them to my ear to hear them ticking. And it ticks so fast it's soothing rather than the 1 tick per second of a Timex.
